Check that the glow plugs are working , the relay is in the e-box(big black box in the right front of engine bay)remove the glow plugs and individually test them. They should glow red after 3 seconds .

Took me a long time to sort, but in my case it was a leaking injector. See if you can get your mecanic to run a leak test. I'm sure the kit has a fancy name, but in essence, they hook up a gadget that allows fuel to pass the flow from each injector into a series of 6 side-by-side plastic tubes - then crank the engine. In my case it was clear that no. 4 injector was passing way, way too much fuel compared with the others. Changed the injector and bingo - instant starting every time.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: My P38 Range Rover wont start

Hi Adam,

Bring your vehicle to an auto parts or battery store. Ask if they could perform a 'Load Check' on your battery. This not only checks the voltage, but also the amps, as if it were under the load of turning your engine.

It takes a few seconds and the results are pass or fail. Fail means it's time for a new battery. Pass means we need to look elsewhere.

Comment back the results.

Hope you find this to be very helpful

Unfortunately, there is a trick to replacing the battery.
1) Open the Driver side door.
2) Open the Bonnet and take the battery cover off.
3) Use your remote to lock and unlock the car (keeping the driver side door open)
4) Pull the Negative Lead from the battery first, followed by the Positive Lead.
5) Change or replace with charged battery.
6) Closed down Bonnet.
7) Your windows, sunroof, and key FOB will not work... so follow the next steps.

7a) Insert your key, with door closed into the exterior lock on driver's side.
7b) While turning the key to lock the door, hold down the "lock" button on your remote for 5 seconds while in "lick" position
7c) Your remote will reset, and you should be able to use your remote now
7d) While driving, roll each window down twice. On your third attempt, you should only have to touch the window button, and the window will have reset

Enjoy your Rover!

If battery is new, and altenator test good which would mean your battery is getting charged, then check the igntion wire that goes to the solenoid. They can get loose, broken, or dirty connections.
Check your battery cable connections on battery and on starter and ground to make sure they are very clean as well as tight.

My 2004 range rover died on my while on parking, I

you may have a fuel related problem,
remove the engine cover and find a fuel test port on the fuel rail
have some one crank the engine and you push in on the core of the valve to see if you have any strong flow of fuel

88 range rover hard to start

It sounds like you're not getting enough fuel see if any of the fuel lines are leaking. Even the vent tube on the gas tank to filler neck, because that can cause poor fuel pressure.Another thing would be the stepper motor is going bad. And last check the cold start sensor right by the thermostat, the sensor with one wire going to it and is facing straight forward.
