P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

I just bought a a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, my question is does it always have to be on 4x4 at all times or where does it have to be on? I live in the city there for i dont think i have to have it on 4x4...

The grands come in two different 4x4 setups. One is part time and will have 2 hi 4 hi neutral and 4 low on the shift indicator. The other option is all wheel drive and it will have 4 hi neutral 4 low.If you have the first option run it in 2 hi unless you have snow then use 4 hi.If you have the second option the run it in 4 hi .Good luck!

1995 jeep grand cherokee grinds when shifting into full time four wheel drive. What gear should the transmission be in when shifting four wheel drive?

Try neutral. or in drive, but just crawling. Give light pressure to the stick and sort of let it just fall into 4x4

Can I tow my 4X4 auto grand cherokee behind a Mtr Hm? I will put everything in N (transfer case & Trany)

I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel

My jeep will not shift into 4low but 2wd and part time and 4high works fine then when you try to put it into 4 low its hard to pull up then when its their and you let offf the brake it just makes a loud...

Well, in the future it would be better to let us know what it is exactly that you drive, (cherokee, grand, jk, cj, ....)however, i'm guessing from the picture that you drive a grand. I dont know how long you have owned it or if you have put it in 4 low before, but you need to put the normal transmission in neutral before shifting to 4 low using the transfer case (the thing that gives you 4wheel drive via the lever) However, on your vehicle, if you have full time 4 wheel, i think you have the selec-trac transfer case and only have a switch. According to the Jeep website and i'm assuming your manual, you need to slow the vehicle to 2-3 miles per hour and then place it in neutral before attempting to shift to 4 low.
