The alternator is not charging, even if it's new, you probably have a fuse that is blown. Look in the fuse panel under the hood where the big fusible link style fuses are held. I think you'll find that one of the larger fuses in this panel is bad. They are hard to see sometimes, a multimeter may be needed to check them.
should there be a power wire from the altenator straight to the battery
There is usually a larger gauge wire that is fastened to a large rectifier terminal that comes through a plastic insulator in alternator case. The large wire will be held to a stud with a 10mm hex nut, it goes to the battery through a large fuse and should have battery voltage on it at all times.
