Question about 1998 Cadillac Eldorado

1 Answer

Speed limiter I'll be driving through Montana, where there is NO daytime speed limit, next year and I would like see what it will do. Don't worry the car is rock solid, has been well maintained and is in excellent mechanical condition, and has the "Z" rated tires . Right now it can't go faster than 108 mph because of the speed limiter. I'd like to know how to over ride the speed limiter. Thank You, Jim

Can you tell me which programing unit I can use to reprogram the ECU?

I have no fear of doing it myself.

    Thank You

It's programmed into the ECU - there's nothing you can remove from the car to delete it. You'd have to find someone who can reprogram your car's computer with the speed limiter removed.

I don't know of any way you can just turn the feature off. It may exist, but I doubt it. That limiter is hard-coded into the ECU. You'd need standalone engine management (MoTec, Electromotive, or an AEM EMS system), and most of those are aimed at Euro and Japanese sports cars. I don't know of anyone tuning the Eldorado, so I doubt there's a way to do it.

The pads might be worn out cutting into the rotors. Try taking your car to a different shop next time.

You don't have daytime running lights but you do have automatic light control. The design engineers reasoned that you would not need fog lights unless you were running with headlights on under foggy conditions so these functions are controlled by logic and can't be separated without rewiring

Bad pulley and belt

If it's the big one on the bottom, that's not uncommon; it's called a harmonic balancer, and you'll need a special puller (available fairly inexpensively) to get it off. Make sure the big bolt in the middle is properly torqued afterwards; if it's not tight enough, it'll come loose - and the pulley will rock back and forth, eat up the end of the crank and cost you some big bucks. If it's the one at the very top, that's the power steering pump - you'll have to get that pulley at the dealer, and it also needs a special tool (a different one from the harmonic balancer puller) for removal and installation. The small idlers usually have bearing failures rather than "come apart", but they're easy to replace.

2001 montana won,t runs about 2800rpms @70 don,t seen to be going into overdrive on adown hill slope when in overdrive with the shifter it drops the rpms down to 700rpms , and when you put the shifter into...

I think I understand the question. These transmissions are known for the 4th speed shaft shearing off the splines. 4th being overdrive. This won't let it shift into overdrive and also no engine breaking when you are coasting. In other words, when you are coasting your engine rpms will drop down to idle speed. So when in 3rd or drive manual, you do have engine breaking and the rpms fall slowly. The transmission is gonna have to come out to be repaired. I hope this helps.

Rear wheels dont turn when i put van in drive. just drag on pavement. front wheel drive (2003, pontiac montana)

Sounds like someone has applied emergency brake, and it has not released for one reason or another. try applying e-brake, just until you feel it resist, then go another inch or so and release it. Keep trying to see if it will let go. Perhaps putting vehicle in neutral and try rocking it backwards will help also.
