1. the sending unit in the tank may have gone bad. - you would have to drop the tank and empty it first and remove the sending unit - reconnect unit to car and move the float up/down and have someone in the car with the key on - see if the gauge moves full/empty.
2. the gauge in the dashboard may be bad.
3. a fuse may have blown - check our owners manual
4. the wiring may have a brake in it.

Sounds as though the fuel sending unit is either stuck, or the float is broken. Try tapping the tank with a rubber hammer to see if that helps, other then that your next option would be to pull the sending unit out all together and replace.

Electrical issue is causing your hassles. Look for a bad ground in circuit common to those items.

I have a volvo s40, 2001. The fuel gauge is not working properly, was told it was a bad sending unit, had the fuel pump replaced (it's not possible to just replace the sender) and a software upgrade by the...

This sounds more like a damaged wire shorting out against the frame than a sending unit. My old Volkswagen did the same thing, and with it, the wire from the tank had become corroded with road salt. This may very well be your problem as well, and if so, a simple wire replacement can solve your problem!

Volvo S80 gauge indicates no or low fuel even when tank is half full.

The most likely culprit is a faulty Fuel Level Sending Unit (sends fuel level from tank to dash gauge). It may be stuck, or beyond repair and in need of replacement. Dealing with electronics in your tank can be tricky and should be dealt with by a professional.

Good luck!

Fuel gauge problem, Volvo 960, 1995

it is more than likely the sender if you pull out pump you can manually move sender or you can test gauge by grounding sender the gauge should go to full if none of this happens you need a gauge
