I had a similar problem with mine ended up being the fusible link on the main battery cable which is located lower right in front of engine if you look down where the wires come out of the wiring harness to the starter you will see the red cable then it will turn into a black smaller wire that is your fusible link I would check that first

Charging System Failure
Refer to Charging System Description and Operation

Electrical Power Management (EPM) Overview
The EPM system is designed to monitor and control the charging system and send diagnostic messages to alert the driver of possible problems with the battery and generator. This EPM system primarily utilizes existing on-board computer capability to maximize the effectiveness of the generator, to manage the load, improve battery state-of-charge (SOC) and life, and minimize the system's impact on fuel economy. The EPM system performs three functions:
ā€¢ It monitors the battery voltage and estimates the battery condition.
ā€¢ It takes corrective actions by adjusting the regulated voltage.
ā€¢ It performs diagnostics and driver notification.
The battery's condition is estimated during key-off and during key-on. During key-off the SOC of the battery is determined by measuring the open-circuit voltage. The SOC is a function of the acid concentration and the internal resistance of the battery, and is estimated by reading the battery open circuit voltage when the battery has been at rest for several hours.
The SOC can be used as a diagnostic tool to tell the customer or the dealer the condition of the battery. Throughout key-on the algorithm continuously estimates SOC based on adjusted net amp hours, battery capacity, initial SOC, and temperature.
While running, the battery's degree of discharge is primarily determined by a battery current sensor, which is integrated to obtain net amp hours.
In addition, the EPM function is designed to perform regulated voltage control (RVC) to improve battery SOC, battery life, and fuel economy. This is accomplished by using knowledge of the battery's SOC and temperature to set the charging voltage to an optimum battery voltage level for recharging without detriment to battery life.
The Charging System Description and Operation is divided into 3 sections. The first section describes the charging system components and their integration into the EPM. The second section describes charging system operation. The third section describes the instrument panel cluster operation of the charge indicator, driver information center messages and voltmeter operation.

Charging System Failure
The BCM and the ECM/PCM will send a class 2 message to the IPC for the CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE message to be displayed. It is commanded ON when a charging system DTC is a current DTC. The message is turned off when the conditions for clearing the DTC have been met.

You need to have a full vehicle scan done. Not just engine code's . An to do this you need a professional scan tool , not auto zone or advance etc.. Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

Your charging system is computer controlled . Do you know what DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's are ? This are all associated with the charging system inone way or another .

Charging system failure 2006 pontiac grand prix

The can be caused by something as simple as corroded battery terminals. Check them first. If they are all crusty clean them and reattach them. I spray mine with white grease to keep them from corroding again.

If that doesn't fix it check your battery. Take it to a shop with a load tester. They will do this for free because if it's no good they will sell you a new battery.

If you battery is good and your terminals are clean then check the alternator.

I have driven these cars for years and have never had an alternator fail. It's always the battery or terminals.

My pontiac grand prix 2006 will not start, I just replaced the battery and a week before that I had to have my Relay module down for my low beam headlights. Not sure if it is my alternator or if I just got...

can you jump start it and when it does start and you remove the jumper cable does it begin to stumble or increase in RPM that would be thhe alternator, to check it you need a volt meter and it need to be 2 volts above 12vlts if you dont have a voltmeter then use a compass and place it near the positve terminal and it should swing that would indicate its charging if you dont have a compass can you acces thhe alternator safely with the engine running (the only problem with this is it may have a plastic cover on it) if you can and there is no platic cover on it get a scre driver and feel the middle back of it you should feel a magnetic pull if you dont you need a alternator, by the way if the battery was bad at the store and started it did you know you automatically lost the alternator a new alternator comes with a warning that the battery need to be fully charge when installing or the alternator will fail

Error code keeps coming up saying charging system failure, an car wont turn over, while making a loud clicking sound

Well if charging system has failed it sounds like your battery is to low to turn over the starter motor. Give the battery a charge over night then have the system checked for a bad alternator.

Charging system failure

Hello! The problem you are experiencing is most likely due to a fautly or malfunctioning alternator. You can take the car to any major auto parts store, and they can do a FREE charging system test which will tell you if your alternator is operating (and charging the battery) properly, as well as if your battery is accepting the incoming charge from the alternator.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Charging System Failure

usually one of two things, alternator or battery. most auto shops will test your battery for free. they'll also test alternator but you'll have to take it out yourself. good luck.
