I have my Dad's old 1997 Nissan Maxima GXE ( he bought it brand new and always took it to Nissan dealership for everything)' It now has 295000 miles on it, but recently started making a loud rattling sound under the hood. I've taken to several mechanic friends and each one has told me something different. The car runs great, very fast V6, just not knowing what that sound is is scaring me- I don't want to break down. I was told it was the timing chain but wouldn't it be running rough? The sound is coming from the far left side of the motor. Help ??? Lisa

If your chain becomes loose it will become very noisy and should be replaced since most nissans are interference engines which means lots of money for a new engine

Could be a problem inside the transmission. The light on at startup is usually a bulb test. keep in mind the light would only come on when you switch the overdrive off. it is on all the time otherwise.
This model uses direct ignition, which means each cylinder has a coil sitting on top of the spark plug, no distributor. So - - air filter - fuel filter - spark plugs. There are things that need to be done at a certain mileage which would be in your owners manual. Such as the serpentine belt, trans fluid change, coolant fluid change, etc.
it might be a good idea to have the transmission serviced by a qualified transmission specialist then you will know if there are any problems with it,seeing as it is your daughters car you want her to be safe when she goes out & not have to ring mum or dad to go & fetch her........hope this helps......cheers.
There are two speed sensors one is called a revolution sensor that is located on the case of the transmission. You can take the driver side wheel off and see the sensor on the top of the case of the transmission. A 10mm bolt is holding it in. Easy fix
Have the sensor changed. When the vehicles computer senses an error in the transmission it puts the transmission in safe mode. Being that its a newer car you might check with your local nissan dealership and see if it is covered under warranty. Good luck:)
