My 1998 audi cabriolet roof won't work the release lever inside the car doesn't seem to work. I cannot hear the back hatch unlock when I try to release it. When I start the car, the roof light flashes for a bit, then goes out. We had to manually close the roof yesterday, and now the switch doesn't seem to work.
There is no release for the top inside the car. Turn key to on position, unlock the top with the T handle at top of windshield.Lift the top away from the top of the winshield and at the same time raise the rear ( botttom) of the top to a vertical posittion. there is a small 3x4'' flap on each side of the car in front of the top storage compartment and inside you will find a small metal tab , you must lift these up ( you will have to do one then the other. Now you can lift the lid and stow the top. Take a look at the latches ( where you lifted the tabs) and make sure they are open to engage the lid. Close the lid. Opening is the reverse. There is no release for the top inside the car. Re: My 1998 audi cabriolet roof won't work the release...
It sounds like the cable for the lever is either stretched or broken if it uses a cable. if it's controlled electronically it may be the sensor needs replacing.
no worries mate. i was also thinking you should test electric motor and the micro-switches.no worries mate. i was also thinking you should test electric motor and the micro-switches.

Unfortunately, the 04 Golf does not have a back-up release lever on the inside of the trunk lid so there are only a few options. You can try and get the trunk motor/latch to work again or remove the plastic trim on the inside of the hatch to gain access to the inner workings.
The trunk latch is released by a electric motor when you press the release button on the drivers door or by holding down the trunk release button on the remote. If you can hear the electric motor in the hatch moving when trying either of these methods, then your problem is most likely a broken plastic lever that connects the motor to the latch.
Some Golf/GTI models had a lock cylinder in the exterior handle on the hatch that can be used to gain access to your interior.
If none of these methods are working for you, then the last resort is to climb into the interior and remove the trim from the back of the hatch. There are screws tucked into the grab handle pockets on the trim that need to be removed before pulling the plastic off (the trim panel is held on with metal spring-like clips that sometimes come off the plastic and stay on the hatch and can easily be removed from the hatch and re-installed onto the plastic trim.
no need to convert.
the electic roof can be opened manually by:-
unlock the roof using the handle on top of the windscreen and push roof back as far as posible.
lift flaps adjacent to door pillers
you will see a small lever which can be retracted (both sides)
when these levers are retracted the roof will push down fully into its compartment
when erecting the roof ensure that the two levers are fully open to accept the roof retaing lugs
The answer is in the manual but, failing that, look under the passenger side sun visor where you will find a little ****. Push the ignition key into it and this will release the roof. Push back the hood until you can see the two panels, one on each side behind the seatbelts on the back shelf. These can be lifted and the mechanism inside will allow you to open the boot to pack away the hood. Good luck!
Open roof latch over windshild.
Raise rear of roof off of hatch
Lift little hatch tabs to access lift mechanism
Release latches on each side with fingers
Lift Hatch with free hand
Let roof fall into storage compartment
Click hatch shut.
Reverse proceedure to put back up.
