Car will crank, but won't start. I changed the glow plugs recently, and also the coolant sensor. It sill won't start. I even sprayed ether in intake, but still didn't fire. It started by being hard to start, but once it was warmed up, it would start right away. After sitting and getting cold it would be hard to start again. Now that is has sat for several months, it won't start at all.

does this car have a timing belt on it did it break , open the air box spray a little ether in it should start ,do not disconnect anything just do this , get back ,
I drive a 2004 F-350 with a 6.0l. 5 glow plugs are out, have to start on ether when temp is below 40 deg F. CAUTION turn key on, wait for glow plug light to go out, spray approx 3 seconds, start. Should crank about 3-4 seconds then fire off. I work on heavy trucks by trade, mainly roadside service work.
If the engine fires up for a second or two with starting fluid then the fuel pump is weak.I would check the fuel pressure and if its not within the specs then replace the pump and filter.
Battery condition? I used to "cycle" the glow system two or three times before cranking. In other words when glow finishes, turn key off then start the glow cycle again. Get a crankcase or block heater. To warm up or "keep" warm. Glow almost never fails.
But it's possible the Glow timer or connections are going.
There are "Cetane" improvers that may improve cold starting. Quality of fuel you are getting? Last time Filter was changed? Really cold? and stuck. Only for emergency, not recommended. Ether cold start spray can. Spray into the air intake. You may need to open Air filter passage to spray. I knew a farmer who had an automatic ether system. Blue up the engine from over speed. So that is why you need to be careful!
I have trouble starting my 313 cdi van. Its a 2003 model. When I spray ether into the air filter, it starts. I know the glow plugs need replacing, but even on warm days it wont start. Any ideas?
Spray ether into the air intake and see if it still takes 5 or 6 cranks...if it starts immediately, it is fuel related, perhaps fuel presure regulator is bad. If the ether doesn't change anything...it is most likely a cam sensor...good luck!
A couple of things to check, is the service engine soon light on at any time? Has the fuel filter or fuel pump been serviced in the recent past?
Is the car stalling consistently each time you drive or is this an intermittent problem that happens occasionally?
Based on your description, I would suspect the coolant temperature sensor, fuel pump or filter (clogged). There are other possibilities but this is were I would start based on your description.
