My 99 Villager has a reaccuring idle problem. After warming up and a few miles of driving the idle will sputter at a red light and sometimes stall. I recently got a tune up but the problem still remains. No one seems to be able to figure out whats going on. I need help!

Throttle body may be dirty.. Clean the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor.

mine does the same thing but it has way 300,000 miles on it..be looking for a tuneup and some vacuum leaks..mine has matbe 3 in it that I cant reach..so I drive with 2 feet..

Usually the problem is due to a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve. Stalling in reverse and not in drive is unusual.

Do you have a "Check Engine" light?

Check the coils in each cylinder. At 140k the valve cover gaskets tend to break and oil will fill the coils causing misfires and stalling.

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

I suspect your fast idle control is not working. Could be solenoid. Mounted on throttle body.


clean the throttle body passages and clean the MAF sensor with carb cleaner. disconnect battery for 2 hours to clear memory in computer, drive for 10 miles to relearn, may run rough for 10 miles.

first ... put a bottle or two of gas line antifreeze in the tank (it sucks up water in the fuel)... if that doesn't sort it out.... your coil pack may be dying
