This is most likely a faulty speed sensor on the transmission but may be a faulty Dash board controller. This should be electronic. If there is no voltage on the wires going to the speedometer it is the Speed sensor or TCM.
I would bet there is a stored error code in your on-board computer.
Call the nearest chain auto parts store and confirm this but all of them offer a free scan of your computer which will often contain information you need to find the problem.
We own our own scanner that was bought about two years ago at Harbor Freight Tools for $30 on sale and it is compatible with all the family cars except my '87 toy car and it has answered many questions for us prior to making or having made any repairs.
Having your own keeps service people honest.
Check on eBay for a scanner to see if it is worth it to you; you will need one that does OBD II.

The stepper motors in the dashboard are bad. This is a known problem on these vehicles. Stepper motors can be bought on e bay for about 6 bucks each. they are not hard to do but you do need to know how to solder the old ones out and solder the new ones in.
