How old are the spark plugs, cap and rotor?? If over 2 years i would replace them. Also you may want to test and replace the ignition module. Sounds like it breaks down due to heat when the engine is warm and needs to cool down before starting again.

After hot engine wont start and smells like gas

Most likely causes are bad engine coolant temp sensor OR leaking fuel injectors. Bad engine coolant temp sensor will give computer false reading and computer provides wrong air fuel mixture. Leaking fuel injectors will load the engine with raw gas--just like flooding it. Try pushing the gas pedal to the floor and holding it there when cranking when hot. That forces the computer into "clear flood" mode and it shuts off the injectors. If it starts up with pedal down, that would be a sign of leaking injectors.

Engine dies while idling, then car won't start for a few minutes

One possibility is a blocked fuel line or filter. It basically runs out of fuel and you have to wait for it to come through slowly. The other possibility is the ignition system is losing spark as something heats up. You have to wait until it's cooled down before it runs again.

Will not start after driving 1997 gmc jimmy

Sounds like you want to check for a vacuum leak at the intake manifold gaskets. This can easily be done with a can of WD-40. Spray the oil around the gasket areas, and, on all vacuum lines.P.S. do this with the engine running. I'm sure you'll hear a stumble or slowing of the engine, if you do concentrate the spray until you're able to pinpoint the leak. Thanks, Dana
