If it ios not the switch above the pedal, the solenoid below the shifter may have failed. There are 5 screws holding down the center console. Open the console to see some of the screws. Others may be hiding under an ash tray or door.
You don't have to take the console out completely as long as you can pull it up enough to see the solenoid that locks the shifter.

There is a very good post at this URL describing how to fix the shift solenoid. Have a look and get back to me with any questions.

you are so awesome - the site you referred me to will answer my questions I think - sounds like the same problem I have - But first I still need to get the darn console off- pain in the neck

Hey jeff, I tried to answer this on a live chat and I was in the middle of typing "Hello" when the thing said that the chat had been disconnected. I looked at my account statement and found that it had been rejected by customer and rated not helpful...I never said a word!...didn't get the chance...Then I see that this guy chatted with you and at least one other expert...You'll have to let me know how this one turns out.

not sure what happened on the chat. They did not mention another expert at all.
The JA was just part of a google result when I was looking for the part. I typed in the shift solenoid and the JA item was one of the hits. On the chat itself, I was having them short the brake switches, but none of them would release the shifter. So I figured the solenoid must have failed. That's when I started looking for a pic of the solenoid. Then, since it was going to take a while to pull up the console, I suggested using this free problem as a way to continue the dialog offline. Hopefully the JA info is accurate and they can get it fixed...I do not like using JA, but I didn't want to copy their stuff either.

I do not have a JA account.

Hi guys - Yes I did speak to an expert earlier - who told me I needed to take it in - he said it was a short - then I saw someone say that I could do this myself - so I logged back on and then lost the connection with dttech - but then Jturcotte came on - and I am working on it - sent someone down to get a solenoid - look I'm just a girl trying to save a few bucks - but you guys are great - Thanks

  • chancelandus Mar 08, 2011

dttech - sorry I did not disconnect from you - you said hello and I was typing you a response and then got disconnected - I never rated you or our conversation which was interuptted - can the not helpful be reversed? I did not give that rating to you - sorry

for some reason, a disconnect always gives us a bad rating. Fortunately the chat ratings do not figure into the actual expert's overall rating. Good, because dttech has a very good overall rating. ;o)

  • chancelandus Mar 08, 2011

Hey got the part put it in and now Im on my way - you really are a lifesaver on this - never thought I could do this myself but I did THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!! :O) Yeah!!!

  • chancelandus Mar 08, 2011

Jturcotte - you rock - great advise - worked out and saved a ton of money - dident have to take it to the dealer - never done anything like this before - thaks for being so helpful :O)

    chancelandus -

Hey it's cool man....I was just trying to figure out what happened. I hope you got your car fixed. jturcotte is one of the best there is..I have read many of his posts and have a lot of respect for him. If he can't help you figure it out...it probably can't be fixed!

THE BRAKE SENSOR IS BEHIND THE BRAKE PADEL LOOK UNDER THE DASH WHERE YOUR BRAKE PADEL IS AT AND TRY TO PRESS IT WIT UR HAND AND YOU WILL SEE IT AND THATS IT YES YOU CAN REPLACE IT IF EMAIL AT TONYGLENN45@YAHOO OR CALL ME AT 786-261-3552

  • chancelandus Mar 08, 2011

can you tell me what it should look like?

  • Paul Bade Mar 08, 2011

It's an industrial-type pushbutton switch mounted either in front of or behind the brake pedal lever. (If it is front, pushing the pedal pushes the button in; if it is behind, pushing the pedal lets the button out.) It will have a couple of wires connected to terminals. If this is the problem, your brake lights don't work either.

I don't know if your model uses the brake light switch or a pressure switch on the brake master cylinder for the shift safety lock. It may not even be electrical, but hydraulic (that is, controlled directly by brake fluid pressure). If your brake lights work and there are only two terminals with wires on the brake light switch, it seems more likely to be a pressure switch or hydraulic mechanism, or else the switch turns on a solenoid in the shifter mechanism and that solenoid is the problem.

My 2005 Nissan Altima won't shift out of park to drive it will if I use a screwdriver in the gear slot how do I fix this problem?

You take it to a qualified repair shop . You have a problem with shift interlock system . Safety system that won't allow the gear selector to move ,unless drivers foot is pushing the brake pedal . Has a brake switch , locking solenoid , an is electrical controlled by the shift lock control unit .

Why doesnt my nissan altima shift

Im assuming you mean that the vehicle wont move when put it in gear and its an automatic! Check the transmission fluid level if it is ok check if vehicle will move in any other gear reverse 1 or L etc. If not it maybe a torque converter issue and maybe best for a transmission shop to sort

Nissan Altima 2006 automatic gear shift got stick in neurtral and won"t go into reverse or park can you help

This seems to be a common problem. Sometimes something like a pen or other items find their way to the shifter linkage and it can cause the linkage to bind preventing it going into park etc. Or you may have a bad shifter cable. Remove the housing around the shifter and see if anything did get in the way of the shifter. While the housing is of, move the selector up and down from park to drive. This will give you a better view of what is happening.

Gear shift stuck

I am having the same problem with my 05 Altima. For a temporary rememdy we took stuck a key down into the release hole in front of the gear shift. There may be a little cover over the hole, but if you take it off and stick something in it, it will release the shifter.

Wont shift out of park unless I stick a screw driver in a small hole above gear shifter.

You must remove the console yes, and you need to replace the shift lock solenoid.
