If it is just the gear or cable,it is simple. Disconnect the cable from the transmission. To test the cable, with someones help, attach a variable drill to the cable and slowly spin it up. If the speedometer does not move or goes backwards, reverse the drill. Also make sure the cable is not defective. Usually you can pull the inner core out and visually inspect it. If the speedometer works, it is time to check the gear. Where the cable connected should be a removable cap of some sort. Remove the cap and the gear is located right inside. Inspect the gear, you should find one or more broken teeth or it may be split in half. Make sure you take the defective one with you to match up to be sure the replacement has the same number of teeth or it will affect your speed readings.
If it is neither of these are the problem it will be a big job to either fix the tranny or replace the meter.

Most speed sensors are mounted on the transmission and not that hard to replace. It should be located on the top of the tranny but all cars are different and mounted in different spots on the tranny.Your local auto parts store should be able to give you the exact location of the sensor. Its a matter of one bolt and a connector.
