An obd reader can run you as little as fifty bucks to several hundred I picked up an actron obd 2 from autozone fifty bucks ready to use and has a cd you can download on your computer. It has an erase code setting as well not bad for fifty bucks.

the actron scanner i use has worked well for me it is sold at advance auto parts or they will run a scan for free if you can get car to them

There should be an OBD II plug under  the dash on the drivers side. It might have a cover over it so look real close. That actron will give you generic P codes.
