Get into the car, close the door, put the key in the ignition, turn 2 clicks to accessories without starting the engine. Press and hold the info and reset (arrow key) buttons (located on the steering wheel) simultaneously until you see a message for reset change oil. Release both buttons and then push the reset (arrow) button. It should be reset now.

OIL LIFE AT 50%, SHOULD I HAVE AN OIL CHANGE? IT'S BEEN ABOUT 6000 MILES.

Yes, you should. While the oil life monitor is based on Hours run time, that seems like it was reset by mistake.

2008 Chevy Cobalt, just changed the oil last week and the change oil soon message keeps staying on. How do I reset, have not had a problem before on oil changes car has 12,000 miles

There are a couple of options for clearing the light depending on the features you have on your Cobalt.
If you have a DIC (driver information center) located in the bottom center of your instrument panel cluster or speedometer area, you should have a mode and set button to the left of the steering column. You can use the mode button to scroll through the options until you find the "oil life" percentage the us the set button, push and hold until you see the 100% displayed.

If you do not have the DIC, you can turn the ignition key to the "run" position ( do not start the car) and push the accelerator pedal to the floor and back 3 times in a row then turn the key off. That should clear the light for you.
Good luck and let me know.
