2005 Cadillac SRX Logo

Hi I have an 05 Cadillac SRX and the automaton transmission shudders. The sequence of events is going up hill, transmission has shifted into higher gear prior to hill. Upon very mild acceleration to maintain current speed the transmission shudders or seems to thump like it wants to down shift, or acts like its momentarily disengaging from the higher gear ...pulling a pressure plate to a higher RPM and the re-engages in the original gear with a thud or thump. It's getting worse progressively and I'm not sure what the ultimate cause is. Has anyone experienced this or know what it is?

I had the same problem. I called Onstar and they said that if the vehicle was shuttering or bumping, pull over and get towed. I as able to move into a car repair facility that said that the transmission was not working. The transmission service company is installing a rebuilt transmission installed so I can get back to my home.

Buy shudder fix might need to get it from a transmission shop its the torque converter lockup causeing the shudder

  • Garthman4607 Aug 01, 2011

I had this problem on my 04 SRX - same thing, going up slight incline @ 30 mph. Like the tranny was fighting to figure out whether to upshift or not. The dealer tried reprogramming the torque converter twice. But that didn't fix it. Then they replaced the torque converter and the problem went away for good. So can I say it was the converter or something else they replaced on the way in/out - who knows.

My car has trouble shifting uphill and in low gears

When a car is going uphill, it has to use more power to get up the hill. Most automatic transmission cars will automatically detect this, and shift into a lower gear to get the car up the hill easier. As you get to the top or let off the gas, the car should than shift into a higher gear to maximize fuel efficiency. What does your transmission seem to do? Not want to go into a lower gear, are the RPMs jumping up and down before it shifts?

My cadillac 2005 srx has developed a scary shudder around 35-40 mph and again around 60 mph. It shakes the whole car at these points during a very gradual acceleration. It feels like my transmission...the...

Likely a rotating part hitting a resonant frequency. It might be a universal joint on the drive shaft, a wheel out of balance or tire out of round. You might try lightly touching the brakes while maintaining the same speed. If it's something to do with tires or wheels, that would likely stop it. My first car would oscillate violently after hitting a bump in the road, due to a loose suspension part.
