CAUTION
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key
must be in the
OFF
or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be
OFF
, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool
or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed
electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure
to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
Left Side

Remove the camshaft seal.
Remove the cam cover screws.
Remove the cam cover by moving the cam drive end of the cover up.
Pivot the entire cover around the water pump drive shaft.
Move the cover upward and pivoting such that the edge of the cover closely follows the left edge of the intake manifold cover.
Discard the cover seal if there is any evidence of damage or if
the seal comes out of the groove in the cover during removal. The spark
plug seals may be reused if undamaged.
To install:
Install the spark plug and cam cover seals as required.
Insert the intake cam through the hole in the cam cover and using
your fingers, guide the cam cover up over the edge of the cylinder head.
Be careful to prevent the exposed section of the cam cover seal from being damaged by the edge of the cylinder head casting.
Work the cover into position by allowing the top edge of the cover to follow the left side edge of the intake manifold.
Install the cam cover screws and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Connect the battery cable clip to the front edge of the cam cover.
Connect the battery cable at the generator
Lubricate the seal lips.
Install the camshaft seal to the end of the intake cam.
Seal the screw threads with sealer GM P/N 1052080, or equivalent, and tighten the screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
Install the water pump pulley using tool J38823 or equivalent.
Install the water pump drive belt.
Install the right and left torque struts.
Connect the PCV fresh air tube.
Install the RH fan.
Connect the spark plug wires.
Connect the upper radiator hose.
Fill the engine coolant.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
Partially drain the cooling system.
Remove the radiator inlet hose from the water housing crossover.
Disconnect the PCV fresh air tube from the camshaft cover.
Remove the ignition coil cassette/coil assembly.
Remove the 4 spark plug boots.
Disconnect the cable harness clips at the front of the camshaft cover and position the cable harness aside.
Remove the secondary AIR valve bracket nut closest to the center of the engine.
Pry outward slightly on the secondary AIR valve bracket in order
to gain clearance to remove the water pump drive belt shield nut.
Remove the water pump drive belt shield fasteners.
Remove the water pump drive belt shield.
Disconnect the water pump drive belt.
Loosen the 2 bolts attaching the water pump belt tensioner to the water crossover.
Remove the water pump belt tensioner.
Remove the plastic dust cap from the end of the intake camshaft.
Remove the water pump drive pulley from the intake camshaft using tool J38825 or equivalent.

17. Remove the 3 camshaft seal retainer bolts.
NOTE
DO NOT reuse the camshaft seal.
18. Remove the camshaft seal.
19. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
20. Lift the camshaft drive end of the camshaft cover up.
21. Remove the camshaft cover reward to clear the water pump drive shaft.
NOTE
Discard the camshaft cover perimeter seals and spark plug seals if there is any evidence of damage or if the seal comes out of the groove in the cover during removal.
22. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover.
To install:
1. Install the camshaft cover seal as required.
NOTE
Be careful to prevent the exposed section of the camshaft cover seal from being damaged by the edge of the cylinder head casting.
2. Insert the intake camshaft end through the hole in the camshaft cover.
3. Work the camshaft cover into position by pivoting the cover down and to the left allowing the cover to clear the camshaft drive chain and then aligning the bolt holes.
4. Install the 9 camshaft cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
5. Install the NEW seal as follows:
Lubricate the camshaft seal lips with engine oil.
Push the camshaft seal into position around the intake camshaft using the protective sleeve supplied with the seal
6. Coat the bolt threads with sealant GM P/N 1052080 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent.
7. Install the camshaft seal bolts and tighten to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
8. Place the water pump drive pulley in position on the intake camshaft.
9. Install the water pump pulley using tool J38823 or equivalent. During installation, the tool will bottom out on the camshaft at the proper depth.
