If the vehicle runs normal once started you may have a bad oxygen sensor and/or air sensor. Since you're under the hood might as well check the air filter. Vehicles need 3 things to start. Fuel, Electricity and Air. A bad sensor will limit fuel delivery. A dirty filter limits air intake. A faulty sensor will send mixed signals to the computer.

Automatic choke problem

93 mirage doesnt have a choke, it is fuel injected! What exactly do you mean by hard to start? Does it take longer than normal to start, does it initially crank slower than normal? You could try cycling the key before attempting to start it! By this i mean, thrn the key to RUN, wait a couple seconds, turn key to off, turn back to run, wait a couple seconds,, turn to off, then attempt to start! See what that does!

Ford expedition noise

humming could be the motor turning round but not engaging with the flywheel. you can check this by hitting the starter with a spanner a few times. if it starts up after you have a sticking solenoid. had to do this a few times my self to get engine started. replace starter as soon as possible if it works. usually happens if you not driven car for awhile.. or you do a lot of starting and small trips.

2003 Ford Expedition is hard to start. I takes two to four turns of the key to get the engine to fire.

Could be fuel pressure loss.
The fuel pump is supposed to hold pressure when the engine stops.
If it falls to zero, you would have to cycle the fuel pump relay a few times to get it back up to start.
I would check the fuel pressure first.

Ecm? how to diagnose if its failing? will it have a hard time starting? does it have anything to do with how that starter would keep turning over when the key released before but not now?

Its very rare to have an ECM go bad and still have the vehicle start and run.

The vehicle will start itself meaning if you turn the key to the crank position and let go the engine will continue to crank until it start. This is completely normal.

If you have an extended crank condition where it takes longer than normal to start the vehicle especially after a hot soak (the engine is fully warmed up, you swing into target for 20 minutes, and then try to start and it takes longer). This is usually caused by loss of fuel pressure. Two common problems that cause this are the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump.

1999 hard starting expedition, with 5.4 engine

fuel pump may be going. try this. turn key on, listen for fuel pump to run for 5 seconds. Turn key off, wait 15 seconds or until you hear relay click inside car. Turn key on again for 5 seconds and ff for 15 seconds. repeat once more. This will pressurize fuel system to 40 psi so injectors have full pressure. If it starts quickly now, you are getting bleed down through the check valve in the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.
