ALL CONVERTABLE TOPS HAVE SEVERAL PIVOT POINTS THAT MUST OPERATE SMOOTHLY TO RETRACT AND CONTRACT TO THE CAR! ALSO A MOTOR HAS TO OPERATE ALL THIS OPERATION! IF ANY OF THOSE PIVOT POINTS ARE BENT, RUSTED, OR NOT WORKING PROPERLY, IT WILL CAUSE A MALFUNCTION!

2008 Chrysler Sebring hard top convertible goes halfway back to open then stops in the middle of the cycle.

There are many possible causes of this problem on the convertible Sebrings, the most common problems are as follows;

1) The cargo platform in the trunk is in the wrong position which blocks the rear window from folding downward. Ensure that the cargo platform is in the down position before attempting to operate the top.
2) The Hydraulic pump is low on fluid, it is located in the trunk, in the left rear corner, underneath the carpet. Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir.
3) There is an electrical fault in the system.
4) There is physical damage to one of the panel pivots, inspect for panel binding while the top is moving.

A couple questions for you;

When the top stops moving can you still hear the pump running or does it go quiet?

When the top stops moving does the cluster display "convertible top in operation" or "convertible top malfunction" or something else?

Report back with anything you find or if you need further help.

2008 cadillac cts 3.6 codes showing are p2176 and p0420 what does this mean

P2176 is the Throttle Actuator Control System
See the hyperlink below for info on this code:
http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=14603

P0420 is Catalyst System Below Efficiency (i.e. catalytic converter on the exhaust system.)
To check your catalytic converter, get a very light, small finishing nail hammer and tap the catalytic converter lightly, if you hear rattling inside it then it's shot. If your exhaust pipes are rusted through anywhere, get it all done at the same time. You can DIY using parts from Walker Muffler... schematics are available on line, get new hangers too!

Starts & run when put in gear shuts off, will restart 3.8eng will not move as though the trans is locked

There is a good chance that your torque converter is locked due to a torque converter lock-up solenoid malfunction. (pretty common) The torque converter lock-up solenoid is what locks the torque converter to put the transmission into overdrive. When they malfunction, it will cause the transmission to be stuck in overdrive at all times (this is not supposed to happen until the vehicle speed gets over 45 Mph). You must remove the side cover from your transmission to replace the torque converter lock-up solenoid.
Please also be advised that many of the solenoid malfunctions - especially on older, high mileage vehicles, are caused by dirt and debris in the transmission. This debris is usually caused by wear or breakage of internal parts (like clutches or bearings) in the transmission. I would recommend also pulling the lower pan and filter off to see what kind of debris is in the pan and evaluate whether this may be caused by a more serious problem.

How do you know if your cat converter is going bad? Can you test for it?

There are two ways a converter can fail:
  • It can become clogged.
  • It can become poisoned.
There really is no "inspection port" for the consumer or mechanic to see an actual clog in a converter. Often, the only way to tell if a catalytic converter is malfunctioning (plugged) is to remove it and check the change in engine performance. When a clogged converter is suspected, some mechanics temporarily remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter and look for a change in performance.
A catalytic converter relies on receiving the proper mix of exhaust gases at the proper temperature. Any additives or malfunctions that cause the mixture or the temperature of the exhaust gases to change reduce the effectiveness and life of the catalytic converter. Leaded gasoline and the over-use of certain fuel additives can shorten the life of a catalytic converter.
A catalytic converter can also fail because of:
  • Bad exhaust valves on the engine
  • Fouled plugs causing unburned fuel to overheat the converter
Sometimes you can tell that a converter is clogged because you don't go any faster when you push the gas pedal. Also, there usually is a noticeable drop in gas mileage associated with a clogged catalytic converter. A partially clogged converter often acts like an engine governor, limiting the actual RPMs to a fast idle. A totally clogged converter causes the engine to quit after a few minutes because of all the increased exhaust back pressure.
The catalytic converter, like the rest of the emissions system, typically has a warranty length that exceeds the term of the warranty for the rest of a typical U.S. automobile.
Here is a safety reminder: Do not park your car over tall grass or piles of dry leaves. Your car's perfectly running catalytic converter gets very hot -- enough to start fires! You can keep it running well by keeping the ignition system in top shape, to prevent any unburnt fuel from entering the catalytic converter.

My 2004 Kia Sedona's engine light is constantly on. A mechanic attached a diagnostic tool and came up with the following codes: P0431 and P0325. Anything to be concerned about? Thanks

P0325 Knock sensor (KS) 1 , bank 1 - circuit malfunction
Possible causes: Wiring, poor connection, KS

knock sensor malfunction may reduce fuel mileage due to computer reducing ignition timing advance.

To repair: Check connector on knock sensor. If connection is good, replace sensor.

P0431 Warm up catalytic converter, bank 2 - efficiency below threshold
Possible causes: Catalytic converter, wiring, HO2S 2

increased HC emissions--no effect on engine performance unless caused by rich mixture.

To repair: Usually caused by worn out converter, but first verify fuel pressure regulator is not leaking fuel into it's vacuum port and that fuel pressure at the fuel rail is not above specification.

The car will run fine and there are no safety issues; however, before driving over anything that could ignite (for example, grass), make sure the catalytic converter is not glowing red.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

P0740 T Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction

The transmission fluid could be in need of a change, certain parts in the transmission depend upon clean fluid to move properly, this could cause the pressure sensor to fail and engage the torque converter to lock up at the right time. Timing is counted with the computer and it will flash lights when there is a problem.
