You have little or no fluid in the system. The first thing to do is to check the fluid level. If it is full you need to bleed the air out of the lines. If it is low, fill it up and press the brake pedal. While you press the pedal have somebody else look outside the car to see if there is any fluid leaking out of a broken brake line. If you do not see any leaks and the fluid still goes low it may be leaking into the brake booster. There is no way to check that except by replacing the master cylinder.

Most likely it could be a line leak or wheel cylinder leak, this is common in old cars. 19 years is bound to have an effect on the braking system. Check to see if there are any signs of leaking. If you leave it and leave it, it will get worse and more dangerous. Get a mechanic to check it out otherwise 1. it will be very dangerous 2. it will cost more to fix the longer you leave it.

To check its not something simple, also check your brake fluid level, if it's low top it up.

My brakes went to the floor won't pump up full of fluid and no leaks 2003 Chevy truck

If you step on the brake pedal and it has little to no pressure and goes all the way to the floor, especially if you're getting no braking:
  • Low Brake Fluid Level: Check your brake fluid. If it's low, top it off to the mark on the side of the reservoir.
  • Air in the Brake Fluid: Even though your brakes operate in a closed system, contaminants can still work there way into the works. Air can enter the system through the smallest hole. Bleeding your brakes will remove the air and replace it with new fluid.
  • Master Cylinder Bad: A bad master cylinder will cause your brakes to have no pressure. Master cylinders cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced.

How to fix brakes that goes to the floor after i replaced the master cylinder

You must have air in the brake lines. You will have to bleed the lines to get the air out. You will have to locate the bleed valve near each wheel. It is easier to take off the wheel so you can see everything. The brake line will have a drain screw near the place that the line goes into the brake caliper assembly. You will need a helper. Loosen the screw a bit then have your helper press the brake to the floor. Fluid and/or air will come out. While they hold it to the floor, tighten the screw so it won't such air back in when the brake peddle is released. With the brake pedal released, open the drain screw again and have the helper press the brake to the floor again. Repeat this until no more air comes out when the brake pedal is pressed. Then move to the next wheel and repeat. During the process make sure that the fluid in the master cylinder does not run out. The level will drop each time you bleed some of it from the bleed valve (or drain screw or whatever you want to call it). It helps to open the drain screw just enough to let a little fluid out. You won't waste as much that way. By time you get through with the last wheel the brake should not go to the floor anymore.

Brake pedal goes to floor when engine running but is fine when engine off

bleed the brakes again starting at the longest line at the rear and work forward . The indication is still air in the lines.

Why do i have loss of brake pressure

Long shot: Bad master cylinder - Typically the brake pedal will slowly sink to the floor. On early 2000 vintage Chrysler products you need to check brake lines as they have been known to rust (and fail catastrophically)

I pressed on my brakes and a sound like air ,then brakes went out .

This is just a WAG since I can't test your vehicle, but it sounds like your vacuum boost ruptured. It is that big saucer looking thing that your brake master cylinder hooks too.

While this was a very rare occurance with older cars, something in the manufacturing process has changed and this is happening more and more.

How do i bleed the brakes on a 99 ford expedition?

on the brake calipers ther is a bleeder screw. It looks like a grease fitting.1) fill brake fluid 2) have a helper pump the brake pedal ( vehicle not running ) 6 - 8 times to the floor and release then press pedal to the floor and hold with foot pressure pressing down. 3) at this time loosen the bleeder valve and the pressure and air will release,( do not allow brake pedal to release or come up, continue to hold to the floor ! ) after pressure and any noticeable air bubbles and no more fluid comes out then this is the time to tighten or (close ) the bleeder screw. 4) continue this process untill no visable air bubbles are present, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHECK THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR AFTER TWO BLEEDINGS AND FILL AS NECESSARY ! 5) Continue the procedure on the opposite side. Do the two front wheels and the rear wheels as a pair as the brake system is a two part system, FRONT & REAR

Hi ! I was on the road and between driving the car lost the brake pressure ! hope ste speed was slow , but hit the car front of me. When the engine stopped the brake feel good when push few times , but the...

most common problems will lies in the master cyclinder become faulty. If the pressure feel spoongy or when you press the pedle all the way to the floor and no brakes or with little brakes, it will be your master cyclinder unit; sometime if you have to pump the brake couple of time to get the brake to work. replace the master cyclinder, fairly cheap. if you do it your self make sure you bleed it properly.

No brakes

Hi Robert!

When bleeding the fronts and the pedal does not go down all the way, stand on the pedal HARD and see if it won't go down then...

The proper sequence is to bleed fronts FIRST... if you had done this, you probably could have avoided this problem... but no worry, it is just a nuisance!

If you still have a problem after trying this, you might have a master cylinder problem... the seals to the fronts might be leaking, not able to build pressure...

So try this and let me know how it goes, and DON't FORGET: Your rating is my ONLY compensation for helping you!

Thanks!
