2001 Toyota Prius - A warning light with exclamation mark on a car appeared on the MultiVisual Display Unit
I have a 2001 Toyota Prius Hybrid with almost 145,000 miles on the odometer, and when I started the car recently, a warning light with exclamation mark on a car appeared on the MultiVisual Display Unit. I checked my fuses, and there is no problem with them. Does anybody have any idea as to what is causing this problem? Thank you!

The computer is warning you that it has detected a problem with the Hybrid System, probably with the main battery. Take the car to a dealer so that they can read the diagnostic codes from the computer and determine the problem.

It means Master Warning Light. It illuminates when there is any malfunction in the engine and/or the hybrid system of the vehicle. When the master warning light illuminates, it become necessary to get the car be scanned thoroughly for malfunctions.
The light that looks like a car with an exclamation mark in the middle of it is the HYBRID WARNING light (see diagram below) You must scn the onboard computer network to determine why this light is coming on. You also need to scan your computer system to find out why the engine keeps dying. If the hybrid batteries are discharged, they must be properly recharged to prevent serious damage.
CAUTION: Read ALL service and warning lables in the engine compartment before attempting ANY type of service on a hybrid vehicle. The wiring harnesses that have ORANGE connectors are HIGH VOLTAGE connectors and can cause serious injury or death.
DO NOT touch any wiring harness or component that has a HIGH VOLTAGE warning label on it.
My recommendation is to tow the vehicle to a qualified hybrid repair center (preferably the dealer) and get it properly diagnosed and repaired. The high-tech, high voltage systems in this vehicle is nothing for anyone but a trained, certified technician to be messing with.
some other garages can diagnose this problem m8 but its not wise as there not used to the system there gonna charge about 70pound to look at it, how old is the car? it might still be under warrenty, it should not have done to much damage though.
Acording the online manual , that is the Hybrid system warning light. I havn't tracked down exactly what it means , but is is grouped in with other service reminders. Will add more info when i find it " Google 2005 prius warning light " one of the first listings has a link to toyotapartsandservice.com
I had the same problem. I removed the relays from the fusebox under the bonnet/hood (top left side) and then replaced them. All working OK now. Sometimes I have had a problem when I start the car (especially after rainy day) the petrol engine immediately dies and I can only drive in electric. I have found that if I turn the ignition off and then restart it and immediately pump the accelerator it makes the engine run OK. Hope this helps.
