Plenty of oil in engine according to dipstick but the oil light is coming on and there's oil near the sensor so what needs to be replaced first? Just put in an idle sensor/switch this week.

You indicate there is adequate oil in engine....does it run quietly, or does in make any unusual noise?

If it's quiet, probably just a oil pressure sensor. If, on the other hand, it's making any knocking sounds, could be a oil pump.

Pull the sending unit, hook up a manual oil pressure gadge, 20 to 40 lbs. If so, bad sending unit, If not, bad oil pump, or bad bearings.

The low oil sensor could be bad or may have come disconnected

The oil light in my 1985 Mazda 626 keeps coming on although there is plenty of oil in the engine. I checked and topped the oil up less than a week ago (before a road trip) and today the oil light came on....

The oil light will come on with low oil pressure (it is most likely a faulty / blocked sensor). This could be a simple sensor fault or blocked pick-up or a problem with your pump. I would get it checked out - if the oil pick-up needs to be replaced or cleaned the sump would need to be removed. A quick visual is to open where you top up the oil and see if you can see no oil at the top of your engine if there is very little or none then it is definitely the pick-up and don't drive the car as you will cause wear. If you start your engine you should see oil "sloshing" in the top end - again if there is none then there is no lubrication for the top end.

always go by the reading on your dipstick !!! this is probably a bad low oil sensor, i know warning lights can be irritating but if the dipstick says full DONT add more

My oil light on my 1999 Volkswagon Passat keeps beeping and flashing constantly. There's plenty of oil and the oil pressure has been checked and is perfect. Even had the sensor replaced thinking it was...

I also had the same problem with my golf, only to discover that the dipstick was cut short that really mesleads the oil level is enough but not.Check or buy new dipstick set and drain engine oil and fill new one.

How many quarts of motor oil does it hold with filter

the oil light isn't for oil level, its for pressure. if the oil is touching the lines on the dipstick, you have plenty. don't overfill it, that will cause other issues, such as smoking and misfiring. make sure the level is between the lines on the dipstick. if the level is correct and the light is still on, there is an internal oil pressure problem, such as oil pump, clogged oil passages, or worn out engine bearings (cam, crank, rods). you should not drive the car if it is full of oil and the oil light is on. have it towed to a shop or serious engine damage could occur, if it already hasn't

Oil warning light goes on, but plenty of oil

An RED OIL LIGHT on your dash, means a LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE. Has nothing to do with HOW MUCH OIL IS ON THE DIPSTICK. Now , does it just flash for a couple of seconds, or is it on steady ? Is there any engine noise ? Hope this helps

Check engine light after every oil change 2005 Honda

This happens because the oil filter needs to be free of air. When the oil pressure sensor drops below a certain value it shuts off the injectors because the PCM. This is a good feature because if you run out of oil for any reason it should stop the engine before damage occurs.
