How To Install Replace Remove Rear Door Panel Ford Escape01-07 1AAuto.com. 1A Auto Parts ... Published on Jun 15, 2012... Do you have a video that shows how to fix a ford escape 2001rear passenger door latch?
You need a latch assembly. Common problem. Open the hatch glass. Then try and lift up and push forward the plastic door panel around the spot where the glass closes into the hatch. It should give you enough room to see the latch assembly inside. Use a flashlight to look for the latch which is in the center bottom of the hatch. There is a white plastic lever. Push or pull on the lever and the door should open. The latch has a electric actuator that goes bad. Only replaced as a latch assembly.
Get some dielectric grease and put it on the latch located on the bottom of the hatch. You will need to put quite a bit of grease in there and make sure you get it right inside the latch. Use the dielectric grease that comes in the squeeze tube not the spray can.
I had the same problem on my 2002 Escape. Ended up taking it to the dealer and they replaced the Lift Gate Lock Actuator - cost us about $310 (parts and labor). Part #1C3F-18C815-AB
check the latch and see if it has been tripped closed some how.look at the front doors and see what a open latch looks like and try to unlatch the rear one by holding the open lever down and trying to move the latch jaws open with your fingers or screwdriver.then spray with some oil.
It is the rear door lock actuator. It controls the window and hatch lock. Unfortunately the actruator is a dealer item and Ford does not sell the actuator by itself. You have to putchase the entire latch assembly whic comes with the actuator. It will run you about $150 for parts.
Probably a issue with your actuator... there is a recall due to the "latching system does not meet the inertia load requirement" might want to check with the dealership to see if your vehicle is with this group, hope this helps :)
Recall 04V602000: Liftgate Latch Release Rod Replacement
Certain 2004-2005 sport utility vehicles and certain 2001-2003 sport utiity vehicles having rear liftgate components serviced with 2004 equivalent components fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components." The rear liftgate latching system does not meet the inertia load requirement in one direction.
