Improper fuel/air mixture, possibly plugged up air filter?
You have 2 out of 3 of the needed components for that motor to run, and assuming your timing is correct and you have compression, it could be an air intake issue.
It's very likely that you need to replace the fuel pump. Usually, if its that loud either its sucking air (because you're out of gas) or the pump is about to go out.
VW transmissions are seal and only take a special type of transmission fluid. Need to buy the correct type of fluid from your local VW dealer.
As for this being your problem, might want to verify first by checking to see if you have any codes in the transmission control module or the engine control module.
chances are the spring that opens the flap is weak, just replace the spring.if it gets stuck shut pull away the carpet/trim from inside the trunk to get to the flap wire.

Misfire Detected, Fuel Level Too LowIf the low fuel level is not the case check for a dirty heat sink for the ingintion/igniter module or any other source of a misfire, if you have run out of gas this could cause the code as well
If the engine requiresPrem fuel I would use it, the problems of not using it are possible piston damage. decreased power and lower fuel economy, when regular is used the knock sensor pulls the timing back to reduce knocking, this i where the lower MPG comes in and power problems, if knock can not be eliminated then the pistons may be damaged. I have a Corvette that uses Prem fuel, if I run regular I loose 3 MPG, so the trade for lower cost fuel is cancelled out by the loss of MPG.
