How do i change the starter own an 1998 buick regal 3.8L i heard that it was simple but u have to remove something under the hood. i was wondering is it the same as a 1996 or 1997 buick regal.

Fuses are under the dash not behind it.relays are probably under the hood.

• Fuse box 1 is inside the car on the end of the right side of the dashboard. Map for fuse box is on the inside of the cover.
• Fuse box 2 is under the hood. Black rectangle with 1.5inch knob that holds lid on. remove lid and more fuses and relays. The map for this fuse box is also under the lid.

Look for a loose bulkhead connector, or something near the alternater. This ride should still be under warranty, so let the dealership figure it out!

Here is a step by step. As always care must be taken when lifting a car, proper support is necessary.

The starter is on the side of the engine closest to the radiator.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and isolate it so it can't make contact with the battery connection.
2. Raise and properly support the car.
3. Disconnect the wires from the starter.
4. Remove the plastic shield from the bell housing to expose the starter bolts.
5. Remove the starter.
Note: If there are shims under the starter you will need to replace them as needed.
Note: Compare the old starter with the new starter before installing are two different starters for this application.

Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Use a spring compressor to clamp the spring down (Be Careful). disconnect strut from lower control arm, and the 3 or 4 bolts under the hood ontop of the strut tower. Remove strut and spring, remove spring from strut (Still Compressed), put spring on new strut (Still Compressed), Install bolts under hood, aka strut tower, reconnect lower control arm, slowly uncompress the spring and make sure it seats properly. Take it an alignment shop to get your front end re-aligned.

Yes. It could also be dirty electrical contacts in the switches. Worst case is that all four regulators have failed, but not likely if they went out at the same time.

it is bolt on but there is two bolts that go straight up they will remove the starter make sure you disconnect the battery first and be careful not to mix the wires when installing new one good luck

look under the spare tire cover, should be on under side of cover, options are in alph. order. S.R. Peace
