1997 Mazda Protege is not accelerating? I put the car into gear, the RPMs go up but no acceleration. It will eventually start speeding up but if I'm going up hill, it just spins RPMs and no acceleration?

It sounds like your neutral safety switch. Is it auto? If so, when it starts to slip try pulling back on the shifter while it is in drive, don't change gears, just pull back on the shifter. Sometimes it will move the switch just far enough to send the signal that it is in gear. You can try adjusting it by loosening the adjustment bolt and turning it. You have to remove the airbox to get to it, but it is really easy. If that still doesn't do it, then try to replace it. Like $20. You will need a large socket and breaker to get the main nut loose. But then it just slides off.
Sounds like a bad cv joint. Easy way to check is to raise the front of the vehicle so both front tires are off the ground. Use jack stands under the vehicle and block the rear tires. Start the engine and put the tranny in drive. Let the front wheels rotate while the engine is idling and turn the steering wheel slowly in both directions. Listen for the clunking noise. You may have to speed the engine up a little to make it work.
The clutch is slipping, eventually it will fail completely. The reason she notices it in 5th gear is because 5th or overdrive uses the transmission the most IE low rpms high speeds. Soon it will affect all gears. Sorry the only way to fix it ts to replace it.
I think they make a clutch kit for this model
Good luck
Hope this helps

When you losing speed, do you lose RPM? This is important.
1- If you don't lose RPM then you have a problem with your torque converter.
2- If you lose RPM then you have a problem with fuel air mixture and this is controlled by ECM. Usually ECM is not a problem, but the problem is coming from other sensors contributing fuel: air mixture control like Air mass flow control ans Oxygen Sensor besides the throttle body valve is gummed up and need a through clean. So try to address the last one first then follow in reverse order if the case is in # 2. Good luck.
