Explorer, 2000; 4.0 EFI: Engine runs fine in neutral & responds well when accelerator is depressed; shift to reverse or drive & engine runs very rough....with no power whatsoever. Scanned engine & codes P1747 (electronic press control solenoid short circuit) & P1451 (EVAP control system vent control-valve circuit malfunction) appear. These two codes to me don't appear to be connected in any way. Problem began without warning while waiting at a traffic signal. Would appreciate any suggestions. mike hill

P1747 * EPC, wiring, PCM EPC solenoid circuit failure, shorted circuit or output driver Voltage through EPC solenoid is checked. An error will be noted if tolerance is exceeded. Short circuit causes minimum EPC pressure (minimum capacity) and limits engine torque (alternate firm). Go To Pinpoint Test
The EPC solenoid is shorted or the electrical circuit (wiring) or the transistor (driver) inside the computer is fried. do you know how to test a computer controlled circuit ?

The Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) is used to prevent gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere from the fuel tank and fuel system. The EVAP system usually requires no maintenance, but faults can turn on the Check Engine light and prevent a vehicle from passing an OBD II plug-in emissions test.

  • Damaged PCM
To verify normal function, monitor the EVAP canister vent solenoid signal PID EVAPCV and the signal voltage (PCM control side). With the valve open, EVAPCV will indicate 0% duty cycle and the voltage approximately equal to battery voltage. When the valve is commanded fully closed, EVAPCV will indicate 100% duty cycle and a voltage drop of 4 volts minimum is normal. Output test mode may be used to switch output ON/OFF to verify function. This is another electrical circuit problem .

Technical Description:
EVAP Control System Canister Vent Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
The EVAP system monitors the canister vent (CV) solenoid circuit for an electrical failure.
The test fails when the signal moves outside the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified canister vent duty cycle by PCM command.
Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems.
Causes: A code P1451 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
*VPWR circuit open
*Damaged canister vent solenoid
*Canister vent solenoid circuit open or shorted to ground, power, etc.
*Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
*Possible SolutionsVerify canister vent solenoid - To verify normal functioning, monitor the EVAP canister vent solenoid signal PID EVAPCV and the signal voltage
(PCM control side). With the valve open, EVAPCV indicates 0% duty cycle and a voltage approximately equal to battery voltage.
When the valve is commanded fully closed, EVAPCV indicates 100% duty cycle, and a minimum voltage drop of 4 volts is normal.
Output test mode may be used to switch output on/off to verify function.
*Replace canister vent solenoid

SOURCE: trany does not shift right after coming to a stop

Hi,

I have found the meaning of all the codes that come up. Refer the blog link mentioned bellow:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/557875-need-guidance-with-obd2-codes.html

The reasons are very self explainatory.

Thank You

SOURCE: Scanner shows P1451-- EVAP Control

it is important to also include you make, model and year with this information, ford has made different types of evap systems over the years, each with different guided dignosis and each with different resistance values as specifications.

they have also published TSB's for specific vehicles for diagnisos aid

please re post the question with all information, and i will look for it, and aasist you on this topic

as first reply, after this i can not attach more than words, that why to re post and i caan attach vehicle specific diagnosis service publications

2001 F 150 STANDARD HAS ISSUES SHIFTING CAN SHIFT UP BUT WONT ALLOW SHFTING DOWN

Sounds like either the clutch is not fully disengaging, or the synchronizers are going bad. With the engine running, and in neutral, can you shift it easily into 1st or reverse? If not, it's a problem with the clutch not disengaging.
If it's not a clutch problem, you may be able to 'work around' worn synchronizers by double clutching; when shifting down (like from 4th to 3rd), depress clutch, shift to neutral, release clutch and tap the accelerator, then depress clutch again and shift to 3rd. This is how you had to do it before there were synchronizers, especially in heavy trucks.

Engine cut out

Sounds like you may have fuel filter problem. you may want to check the pump and filters located in or near the fuel tank.
Go directly to the source ( Fuel Tank, Pump, Filters, Fuel Pressure Regulator and Injectors )
You may have water or grit in the fuel
Hope this helps

1998 ford explorer runs fine in drive but in reverse engine only revs as if it were in neutral. Is it the shift cable or the transmission?

to make sure which one disconnect the cable and with your hand click all the way to the front, start the engine have someone in the vehicle with the parking brake on and their foot on the brake the manually put it in reverse, if still no reverse its the transmission.

84 crx starts fine and idles fine in park and neutral, but dies immediatly when shifted to drive or reverse. Will run very roughly if pumping accelerator. What's going on?

You might want to check the engine for a vacume leak.Once the rpm's drop it may have a big enough vacume leak to not keep it running under a load.

1999 Toyata Corolla will not start unless accelerator is depressed. Only continues to run in neutral/park if accelerator is depressed. If shifted to drive engine dies. What are the possible explanations?

check and clean/replace (idle air control) IAC valve. Its probably sticking or motor may be dead, replacing the unit is recommended. This unit controls your engine idle. Hopefully this helps
