My father is trying to sale his 1988 2 door cadillac deville he had it park 4 a while and went to put a new battery in but the cable for the hood release broke and is unable to open the hood ! is there any tip or any1 know what or how to open the hood without further damaging the car ? thanks

Sounds like one of the cables from the battery is bad. Could be corroded or worn or chewed in half.

Use vise grips under the dash on the cable,
where the handle broke

May have to remove some dash panel to get
to it

Put the key in the driver's side door and unlock the door. This should disengage the alarm.

Have you checked all the fuses on the car panel are located under hood,dash,under rear seat and trunk

check battery connections, check grounds

Place the DeVille in "Park" and allow the vehicle components to cool for a half hour.

Locate the battery under the hood of the DeVille. The battery tray is located on the driver side of the Cadillac. Locate the strap securing the battery to the battery tray and unbuckle the strap.

Disconnect the negative cable using a combination wrench. The negative cable is the black cable. Place the cable to the side. Disconnect the positive cable next, which is the red cable, and place it to the side. The battery can now be removed. Lift the battery off of the battery tray, carefully. Dispose of the battery per local regulations.

Use a wire brush and clean rag to clear away debris and dirt on the battery tray to ensure a clean connection.

Install the replacement battery by placing it on the battery tray. Buckle the battery tray harness around the battery. Reconnect the red cable, followed by the black cable, using the combination wrench. Close the hood of the DeVille.

get under the car and there you can maunally release hood you have to pull cable your self from under the hood will release the hood hope this helps

adjust the vacuum switch on top of the steering column under the dash

1988 sedan devile hood latch/cable. can not open the hood.

I had this problem last week and didn't know what to do. went to a mech and was told for $90 p/h they would try and could take 1,2 or 3 hours.

they can not tell till they try. also called a gm dealer service center and was told the same thing except they charge $150 p/h.

no way . I found a sugestion to to the following .

I'll tell you right now it worked and is soooo easy. I made a cable to stick in the hood and opened the hood in 10 seconds. blew my mind.

go to a hardware store and buy a metal rod - steel rod 4 feet - cost 3 dollars.

get the thin rod about the size of a hanger. put it.in a vice and make 2 bends - bend the rod 1 inch at the end and 4 to 5 inches from there on the second bend

...make the second bend at a 60 degree ange .. on the other end of the rod I folded over twice to make a handle then taped the handle side ..

now you have a rod shaped somewhat like a 7 . Now stick it in the fron of the hood between the grill and the hood point todard the latch and ' fish for a min

then tug. it openes.. doesn't take much of a pull and it openes... \I almost fell over ..

so easy. try it ...

you have a bad fan swtich in the block or the therostat housing its an easy fix
