My 1998 Cabrio engine keeps cutting out, if I hit 3000rpm in first it cuts, 2000 rpm in second it cuts, 1500rpm in third it cuts. Either it cuts or goes completely dead. Any ideas? I heard it can be the 02 sensor acting up or the catalytic converter. Also the check engine light is on. Any ideas???
It's a 2.0L, same engine as a mark III golf.

Fuel pressure problem, O2 does not send info to ECM during accelaration so cant be that, catalytic converter doesn't cause check engine light to come on, try changing fuel filters

You are probably hitting fuel cut off.This is built into the engine to keep you from engine damage.Usually at 3k to 3300 rpm`s.Hope this helps.Good luck.
Yes, the PCM for your vehicle's engine has a rev/speed limit seeting programmed into it. Most stock, non high performance/police package vehicles usually won't go above a top speed of 97MPH. if you were to rev your engine while it was in park or neutral, once the engine reaches the cut out rpm limit preset in the PCM, it will cause the engine to cut back, then it will rev up until it hits the preset limit, then cut back, and it keep repeating that pattern. It may sound as though you have a high rev ignition failure that sounds like waaa, waaa, waaa, waaa, but that indicates the PCM is doing its job.
Try taking your air cleaner cover off, and rev the engine to about 3000rpm, put a clean lint free cloth or your hand over the mouth of the carburettor and the engine will die. Try to keep it going for about 10 seconds at about 1500 rpm and take the cloth away until it runs smoothly again at 3000 rpm. Air cleaner back on and see if that makes a difference. It is an effective way of clearing jets that are not too badly blocked.
i have a 1998 nissan maxima when the engine is cold the engine will cut off when you first crank it. It will cut off but i can usually get it going the second time. After engine warms up car runs great. Why does this occur
my 1988 mazda 626 starts okay then dies everytime it idles down to normal idle speed. i replaced the throttle control sensor and the mass air sensor. i replaced the rotor in the distributor but is still dies. if you throttle up to about 1500 rpm it keeps running. any ideas???
