Question about 1998 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

My 1998 Lincoln towncar's radiator grill got totally clogged with lint (like a clothes dryer lint collector) unbeknowst to me which caused a thrown rod in a cylinder which crashed my engine!! A plate over the radiator hid this impending disaster from me and I had no forewarning whatsoever!!! When I had my oil changed and filters checked, shouldn't this have been checked also? and why hasn't any one presented this design flaw to the public as a warning????

You are kidding about the design flaw, right? The owner/operator is responsible to assure proper operation of the vehicle.

I am not sure of what you mean by a plate over the radiator. I suspect you are referring to the top hold down cover.
Unless you are specifically looking for a clogged or dirty radiator, I suppose that one would not see this impending problem with just an oil change. When was the coolant last changed? I am a meticulous sort and when I do a coolant change, I remove the radiator, flush it and clean the fins of any dirt and debris.
As far as this being considered a design defect. I have never heard of it. I checked the "Car Recalls from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration" http://www.arfc.org/autos/ site and found noting. You can Google and see fi you find more info, but Ford, Lincoln and Mercury have been using the same design for years on their full size vehicle.
I am curious as to why the vehicle temp gauge did not provide you with any warning of this impending disaster. The vehicle had to have been showing that it was running hot for some time before this happened
Also, what was it that that clogged the radiator, you used the term "lint", any idea of exactly what is was or where is came from. I am used to seeing dead bugs, leaves, paper and built up road grease, but I have never seen anything like you describe.
One more direction you might take: Was it possible that you hit something on the road, some kind of debris, an old pillow, a box of packing material that fell off another vehicle? IF something like that was the the cause THEN you should contact your insurance, because you may have a claim under your policy under the "comprehensive" coverage.
Please leave me a comment as to what you find out about your insurance coverage.
Sorry that I can not give you a better answer to your question. Maybe on of the other "Experts " here has see this before.

Does the car shake? If so do you feel it in the steering wheel?-front end problem, tires, etc.
Or do you feel it in your seat?-back tires bad or need balanced.

Sounds like shocks/struts. Usually if they start sagging it's because of a problem in the suspension, like shocks or struts.

your blend door motor has gone bad under the dash . the blend door motor controls the blend door in the heater box to allow hot or cold air to flow or a mixture of both to reach desired tempreture. this is a hard job cause the dash must be moved back to get to motor.
