Here is a diagram of the 302 distributor and firing order. If you connected the wires to the distributor in the firing order, chances are you went in the wrong direction. The diagram shows the rotor spins counterclockwise in the firing order. If it was hooked up reverse, you may have one or two cylinders fire, the rest are a jumbled heap of unburned fuel in the exhaust. Also check your distributor cap for wear, cracks or broken towers. Then check your rotor itself to make sure it is still in good condition and is not burned down/disintegrated. I had a rotor disintegrate on me once, and the car sounded horrible until I got it replaced.
