The problem is an automatic transmission malfunction.

P0783 means 3-4 shift malfunction. The code is returned when the PCM does not detect decrease in engine revs after shifting from third to fourth gear.

If the problem happened only once, it may have been a temporary malfunction. If you keep getting the fault code, and you notice transmission problems (hanging in third for too long or wrong shifting), then the transmission must be repaired.

The most common cause for the problem is a faulty transmission shift solenoid in the solenoid pack located in the the valve body, in the transmission. The solenoids are tested accessing valve body and solenoid pack and reading Ohms at single solenoid contacts. When the solenoid is faulty it reads open.

Other faults that return P0783 are faulty transmission relay, faulty TCC solenoid, faulty gp solenoid, and faulty PCM (very unlikely). Here a diagram showing all parts involved:

A flashing check engine light means that you have an engine misfire, You need to have the fault codes read with a code reader or scan tool. Many auto parts stores do this test for free (except Calif.)

Service engine light is on

Need to check what the engine codes are first. You can use a scan tool or turn the key on and off three times in a row then leaving the key on the third time and the check engine light should flash. Count the flashes,(example: flashes two times and then three times thats code 23) or have a parts store scan it for free. Once you have a code it will put you in a direction on what system needs to be looked at.

Chevy cavalier 1994 idles low and check engine lights go on

You need someone with a scan tool or someone who knows how to retrieve the codes without a On 1983-94 models, the ALDL connector or Data Link Connector (DLC), located under the dash, and sometimes covered with a plastic cover labeled DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR, can be activated by grounding test terminal B . The terminal is most easily grounded by connecting it to terminal A (internal ECM ground), the terminal to the right of terminal B on the top row of the ALDL connector. Once terminals A and B have been connected, the ignition switch must be moved to the ON position with the engine not running.
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
  2. The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine light should be flashing. If it isn't, turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper wire. Turn the ignition ON and confirm that light is now on. If it is not, replace the bulb and try again. If the bulb still will not light, or if it does not flash with the test terminal grounded, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician. If the light is OK, proceed as follows.
  3. The code(s) stored in memory may be read either through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp or through the use of a hand-held scan tool. If using the scan tool, connect it correctly to the ALDL.
  4. After the terminals are connected, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but DO NOT start the engine. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the ECM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes have been sent.
  5. After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest.

The order of codes in the memory does not indicate the order of occurrence.
  1. If there are no codes stored, but a driveability or emissions problem is evident, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician.
  2. If one or more codes are stored, record them. Refer to the applicable Diagnostic Code chart in this section.
  3. Switch the ignition OFF when finished with code retrieval or scan tool readings.
  4. scanner.

Check engine light flashes 37 times

Anytime your light flashes like that, it means there could be major engine damage. Get it to Autozone asap and have it scanned. They will do it for free and they will let you know what it says.

What does the check engine light mean on the 92 town car.

If lit, it means that a DTC or diagnostic trouble code is stored in the computer.
Have it scanned or get the DTC interpreted by looking up the code in the service manual.

HAND-HELD SCAN TOOLS Although stored codes may be read through the flashing of the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON lamp, the use of hand-held scan tools such as Ford's Self-Test Automatic Readout (STAR) tester or the second generation SUPER STAR II tester or their equivalent is highly recommended. There are many manufacturers of these tools; the purchaser must be certain that the tool is proper for the intended use. The scan tool allows any stored faults to be read from the engine controller memory. Use of the scan tool provides additional data during troubleshooting, but does not eliminate the use of the charts. The scan tool makes collecting information easier, but an operator familiar with the system must correctly interpret the data. Fig. 1: Super Star II tester - Ford Motor Co. 84924047.gif

Had the engine replaced in my 99 explorer and now the overdrive light keeps flashing

The overdrive light also serves as the "check engine" light but for the transmission. If its flashing it means the computer recognizes a problem with the transmission or its electronics. If the engine was just replaced, they probably forgot to plug something in, or some wiring got damaged in the engine swap. It can be scanned with a scan tool for a code and the code will indicate what circuit is at fault.

How do i check codes on 2007 malibu, with ignition key?

I don't believe there is any way to check the engine codes without the scan tool. There is no way to get an engine code to flash with the igniton key. You can try going to your local parts store, most of them will scan engine lights for no charge. Hope this helps.
