Question about Buick LeSabre

2 Answers

95 Buick Lesabre, stalling and idle problems either too low,(stalling) or too high. Recently replaced TPS, fuel pump, strainer and filter. Runs great when check engine light is on but stalls or goes to very high idle when check engine light is off. Cruise control only works when check engine light is off but that's when I have the problems. Also, cannot read codes as you get an error when scanner is hooked up. Tried 2 different scanners. Any ideas?

I'm looking for an answer in layman terms. I don't have the testing equipment being referred to.

Hi, have you checked the idle air control valve? It's right next to the TPS. Take it out and check the passages for blockage/dirt/gunk. There are some tests you can run on it. Sounds like it may be intermittent. On the OBD connector--are you using an OBD1 scanner? the 1995 is only OBD1 compliant. You might want to also check to see if the EGR valve is sticking. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r7427423-fix_poor_idle_high_idle_stalling_fuel .

TESTING See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Visually check the connector, making sure it is connected properly and all of the terminals are straight, tight and free of corrosion.
  2. Unplug the IAC connector and check resistance between the IAC terminals. Resistance between terminals A to B and terminals C to D should be 40-80 ohms. If resistance is not within specification, the IAC valve must be replaced.

Fig. Fig. 5: Idle Air Control (IAC) valve circuit

  1. Check resistance between the IAC terminals A to C, A to D, B to C and B to D. Resistance should be infinite. If not, the IAC valve is faulty.
  2. If the resistance is within specification, check the IAC circuits back to the PCM for continuity.
  3. If the valve and circuits are functional, the computer control module may be faulty.

Hi,
This sounds like you have a problem with the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) or the wiring circuit which controls it. If you follow the below steps this will help you rectify what is actually causing your idle and stalling problem.
Procedure 1: 1. You will need a Tech 1 Diagnostic tool carry out these test. 2. Once you have this toll installed to the vehicle then run it through the RPM Control cycle test. 3. When doing this test the engine should change idle smoothly
Once you have done this let me know how you get on and I can give you further instructions if needed.
Thanks Jason

Why does it have intermittent high idle, sometimes for up to 1 min. then goes back down? to normal idle

Check the ICM. Idle control module. If the fuel pressure regulator was the problem, you'd have a hard start condition ans a lack of power.

Have you had it to a shop that has a professional type scan tool that can view engine sensor data parameters ? Do you know what those are ? Idle air control counts , mass air flow sensor data , MAP sensor , TPS - throttle position sensor , crankshaft position sensors , Cam sensors , engine coolant temp , intake air temp etc......

1987 Buick Lesabre T stalling and running rough

I just had the same problem. Replaced the fuel filter, still crappy idle and no acceleration. I replaced the fump pump along with the wiring harness and the fuel pump screen and my cars purrs like a kitten, has back to normal acceleration and idles better than before. Hope this is some sort of help to you. I did it myself. Total cost, a little over $120. Good luck. By the way, your fuel pump should be pushing out about 65 lbs of pressure. is it ???
