Removing alternater from 2003 aztec with a 3400 engine

1. Disconnect battery.
2.Remove the bolts from the two dogbone motor mounts located at top of motor front of car.
3.Disconnect the upper radiator supports (this provides a little extra tilting room).
4. Use a ratcheting strap to jack/tilt the engine forward. Attach one end to an anchor point toward the rear of the engine and the other to the frame above the radiator.
5. Ratchet/tilt the motor as far as possible.
6. Remove serpentine belt.
7.Tie a rope or tether of some sort to the alternator.
8. Remove bolts from alternator (if i remember correctly there are 3).
9. Using the rope lower the alternator down behind the motor so you can remove it from under the car.

You will the reverse procedure for installing a new one. Other people will suggest removing the windshield wiper transmission or resevoir. But i prefer to remove as few parts as possible. This same "tilting" method you will use to change your spark plugs/wires. So use high quality plugs /wires at least for the 3 rear ones or you will be repeating this headache soon. Trust me.

Install three back spark plugs 2004 pontiac bonneville

there is a tool that replaces the dog bone upper motor mount that allows you to roll the engine forward which tilts the engine to give you more access to the rear plugs. you can also remove the upper mount and using a large bar roll the motor forward and block into place will do the same.

Tilting the Engine

Set the parking brake and then put the shifter in neutral so you will not damage the transmission. Remove both upper engine mounts, They make a special tool for this but its a little expensive so I just use a ratchet strap. Hook one end to the engine and the other to something solid on the front of the engine compartment. Pull the strap as tight as you can and then ratchet the engine forward as much as you can. It won't give you enough room to remove the alternator, but it will help give you room to take off what you need to to get it out.

How do I replace spark plugs on the back or right side of the engine?

There are two ways to replacing the 3 rear spark plugs.

1. You can remove the two dog bone engine mount in front of the engine bay and tilt the engine forward, so you can reach the spark plugs over the top of the engine with extension and swivel with the ratchet.

2. You can jack up the front end up and go from the bottom of the van. Your going to also need to use extension and a swivel with the ratchet and have to work by feeling your way around.

Careful not to damage the spark plug wires if your not going to replace them.

Good luck and be safe, the easiest way for you to tilt the engine forward is to place the transmission in park and place the parking brakes on with a block in front and behind the back wheels. Disconnect the dog bone engine mount, remove the block from the front of the back wheels. Take the parking brakes off and push the Montana forward and this will tilt the engine forward. Once tilted, place the parking brakes back on and relocate the block to the back wheels.

Follow the instructions in revers to connect the bog bone once again and be safe, better that you have someone help you tilt the engine if your going to do the #1 method.

Thank you for using fixya

How do you Replace the Spark Plugs on a 1999 Pontiac Montana

The three front ones are simple and the three back ones are challenging. There are two ways to replacing the rear spark plugs on the Montana.
1. If your arms are long enough and you have longs extensions with a spark plug socket with a swivel build in to it, you can get to the plugs from under the Montana.
2. You can get to the rear plugs buy disconnecting the two dog bone engine mounts in front of the engine and tilting the engine forward. You can do this by placing the parking brakes on and disconnecting the dog bone, once that is done. Place your foot on the brakes and take the parking brakes off and push the Montana forward till the engine tilts forward enough to give you the room you need to get your arms over the top of the engine with the extensions and spark plug socket. Make sure you place the parking brakes back on and put a block at the rear of the engine to ensure the Montana will not move back and cause you to loose your arm or head.
Note that you need to keep the transmission in park when tilting the engine and that your going to have to replace the spark plug wires and do everything by touch to replace the rear spark plugs.
Thank you for using Fixya and use platinum spark plugs to give you 100,000 miles of service. Good luck and be safe.
