Can't tell you what it is without testing, but you need to check the crank position sensor and fuel pump. Both will cause it to stall and, when they cool down, it will re-start.
Easiest way to check pump is to turn the key on and listen at the tank. If you can't hear it running, it's not.

I need to tow a broken down 1996 Grand Cherokee. I don't believe it has tow hooks. What is the best way to flat tow it about 5 miles?

THE BEST WAY is to locate 2 or more points that seem sturdy. nothing plastic. your best bet is hooking the cables up to something underneath the car that is attached to the frame if not the frame itself. Remember that you want to do it right in the middle of the car or 2 points on seperate ends to have an even nice pull

I had to jump start my 96 GC. It won't stay running unless I give it gas. Tow truck driver thinks its the alternator. Yes or no?

Possible, But it should idle with the jumper cable hooked up. after charging the battery, does it start on its own?

Shuts off will driving, especially if I hit a bumpy road.

check the wires to the fuel pump if they have rubbed against something and the insulation wore through hitting bumps or rain could cause it to short and kick the relay and resets again and will start

1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic;165,000 miles. Check engine light comes on sporadically. Been told catalytic converter is trashed. Sometimes starts great; sometimes hard start. ...

Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!
