Hook up a timing light to the number one cylinder (the one closest to the timing belt) and the battery. Start the engine and aim the light at the crankshaft pulley. The position of the pulley mark and the degree mark on the lower engine cover will give you the timing of the motor. If the marks are hard to see try touching the marks with white paint so they stand out to the flash of the light.

How do I tell if I've got a broken timing belt? It's in a 1996 Dodge Caravan was driving it and it started to kinda chug then just died.

Easiest way would be to peek into the valve cover thru oil fill cap or PCV port and look for valves to move when engine cranks. This would not tell you if it just slipped though. You will have to remove the timing cover to tell if the timing is just off a tooth or 2. If you have overhead cam (and I think you do), you may be able to just take off the upper timing belt covers. Turn the engine to TDC and check the timing marks per below pics

Im replacing the timing chaine and I need to know what the timing specs are.

You don't need to know timing specs unless your installing a high performance cam and you have an adjustable timing chain set. You didn't spec the moter and there's more than one that comes in your car 3.9, 4.0,4.7, 5.2, 5.9. Tell what motor your working on and what kind of timing componants your trying to install. and I'll help you more. Stock or replacement stock you just line upp the marks. tell the engine I'll tell you where the marks are. If in doubt the intake valve opens between10 and 3 degrees before top dead center about on any engine some racing engines open the intake as much as 23 degrees before TDC but they don't idel smooth and their drivers don't care either.

Timing belt

I call B.S! A 6 mo old belt won't look old and cracked like a 5 or 10 year old belt. Sure they can't exactly tell that it's new (6 mo is not) but they can tell that it is not worn! My mother in law used to get lied to by mechanics all the time. I would replace her brakes and two months later a mechanic would tell her she needed new brakes and that it was dangerous to continue driving. I would get so mad that they would con her like that.

Allways ask for your old parts back from the shop!

I need to know the timing specs for a 1994 Chevy 4.3 V6 Engine.

Following the label under the hood. Put in base timing mode by unplugging a wire connector, it usually tells you where it is. This will turn on the check engine light to tell you you're in base timing mode and takes the ECM out of the loop. Should be a single wire tan in color with a black stripe and black connector. If you not sure where the connector is, it's in the passenger compartment behind the carpet, and blower heater. Just follow along the wire harness from the ECM. Remeber a single wire tan in color with a black stripe and black connector. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted if you have any other questions. Be glad to answer any questions and if the label is missing let me know.
