Hook up a timing light to the number one cylinder (the one closest to the timing belt) and the battery. Start the engine and aim the light at the crankshaft pulley. The position of the pulley mark and the degree mark on the lower engine cover will give you the timing of the motor. If the marks are hard to see try touching the marks with white paint so they stand out to the flash of the light.
If the acceleration is impaired or burning alot of fuel. If it runs rough or high idle.
