How many quarts of fluid does the tranny hold?

What I usually do when the transmission is 100% empty and I'm not sure how much oil it holds, is to add about 8 quarts of fluid then start the engine and let it idle for about 20 seconds while manually shifting through all the gears while firmly holding the brakes on. Then I shut off the engine, wait a minutes or so and pull the dipstick. If no fluid is on the stick then I add about 2 more quarts and repeat. Once fluid is present on the stick then with the engine running I'll add a pint at a time until the fluid level is up to the proper level. Shift again through all the gears, recheck the fluid level, test drive it, and do the final recheck of the level. I've never seen any chart that is 100% accurate on how much a transmission holds - they'll be quite close but the only way to be certain is to do a final level check after a road test of a few miles.

Use Nissan Altima Automatic Transmission Fluid and it should hold about 10 quarts total. I would fill with 9 quarts and start the engine and circulate the fluid. Check the fluid level and add what you need.

Did you check your trans dip stick? The tranny dip stick usually has a quart low mark. If this is a manual tranny, that is different, you didn't specify automatic or manual tranny?

You have to check proper fluid level, that is your responsibility. Your owners manual may have some of this info?

oil is API 5w/20 Honda recommends using all there fluids as they are supposed to be subpurb. to the others alot of this info is on the inside of your hood....auto tranny fluid Honda ATF Z1 or equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid....Unleaded gas 86 or higher octane.....Honda Allseason Anti freeze/coolant Type 2 ......50 50 mixture2.4 liter holds 4.4 quarts of motor oil....tranny fluid 3.0 quarts 4cyl

well, if there isn't a big pile of tranni fluid on the floor it gets hard. 1. Bad radiator letting tranni fluid into the cooling system. 2. Tranni fluid slowing escaping through axle shafts. 3. a leak someplace from the tranni or tranni lines.

7.5 quarts with filter/fluid change.
11 quarts, complete refill, including the torque converter.

If the leak is not to bad then they do sell a transmission leak stopper. Ask at the auto parts store. If the leak is real bad then done waste your hard earned cash. You will need to find and fix the leak. You should do this any ways. But in the mean time to check the tranny fluid and I am assuming it is an auotmatic? Then you need to put the emergency brake on and stick it in neutral. Then start the engine and then check the dip stick.Remember this important tip. The dip stick on an automatic transmission is measured in pints and not quarts unlike the oil dip stick.
If the tranny dip stick is down one notch then add just a pint to bring it to the full mark. If no fluid is presant on the stick you can safely add 3/4 of a quart and then recheck. To add the fluid you will need to shut the engine off and then restart it to recheck it. The torque converter holds 90 percent of the tranny fluid and it takes quite a bit. Some vehicles it takes 8 quarts just for the converter to get full. Yours should only hold maybe 6 but thats a guess so you may want to ask the parts store guy to look it up for you. well first theres no plug to drain fluid, you will have to remove the trany pan, the pan gasket and filter need to be replaced,next thing is that it doesnt hold 12.8 qts, thats only if it was dry empty,just dropping the pan doesnt get all the oil out, the converter is still full and the lines and cooler,i would replace the filter and pan gasket then take to a garage and have a bg trany service done, this service gets 100% of the old oil out,your doing a drain and fill, this only takes about 6 qts,good luck.

The cleaning is by flushing. DO NOT LET THEM FLUSH YOUR TRANNY! It will do nothing but damage the tranny.


For as fluid. the 3.2 quarts is if you dont drain the torque converter. If you drain the converter then it will take about 14 to 16 quarts.


The reason i say do not let them flush the tranny is because they force the fluid backwards through the system and that will damage it. Also if the tranny is almost on its last "leg" and you may not know it. Then all that will do is speed the process up.

The four speed automatic shows a total fill (that is all the fluid it can hold) is 5.7 Quarts. So if you just dropped the pan and relplaced the filter, you shouldnt need more than 4 quarts and likely you would have a little extra with that.
