I have a 94 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 engine and a 5 speed trans. The truck has been sitting for a while and now when I drive it the shifting is hard going into 2nd and 3rd. It shifts fine when sitting still. Any solutions? Has anyone had this problem? Thanks

The shift sinkcranizers are dry .may have to pull the shifter and use some white lithum grease on it work the shifter from gear to gear working in the grease drive the truck for about 25-30 miles and change trans fluid

... Doctor, explores the causes of harsh shifting in automatic transmissions. ... Early diagnosis is important to ...
If the gear shift moves freely and the transmission is turning, I would say the shift lever is not connected to anything, or something inside the trans is broke.
If the trans is not turning, something happened to the clutch.
i had the same problame in my 1989 ranger xlt 4x4 i speed shifted a trans that wasent ment to and my trans got stuck in second and wouldent come out had to take it somewhere to get the forks in the trans replaced turns out i bent the forks and it wouldent come out of second
pull the boot off and there is either a bolt or a pin in top of the trans if not there might be a bolt on cover on the trans take the bolts out and it should pop right out
im not sure about the fan Try spraying the heck out of the entire assembly on the drivers side of the tranny with PB Blaster and as for hard shifts is it manual or auto? if auto change filter
There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.
Yes the computer uses TPS (throttle position sensor) and VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sensors information as well as fluid temp and other factors to determine shift points based on the info stored in the PROM (memory) IC chip, if it is not shifting then you either have a poor connection at the trans case electrical connector or a sticking shift solenoid inside the trans, I would pull the trans connector off and make sure it is clean and properly installed, look for a broken connector retainer as well, this is very common and can cause a loss of signal from the PCM (power train control module) module to the transmission shift solenoids. Most likely the 3rd gear shift solenoid is sticking off from sitting so long, had this happen on my truck, cleared itself.
