My ford expedition 2005 has 90K miles, today while driving back home from work the check electronic throttle control light came on, the car didn't shut off but it did not respond to the gas pedal. Luckily I was able to pull up to a parking lot safely. Not until I shut it off and then turn it back on it went to running fine. What does this mean?

I had same problem with my 2005 Expedition. The solution for mine turned out to be a dirty throttle body. Cleaned the inside of it with rag and carb. cleaner so that the throttle plate wouldn't bind and no more problem.
Hello, these codes are usually caused by wiring problems going to one of the coils but could be wiring to the throttle body. If the wiring is good and its a interfereance problem then its going to be harder to find the problem. You will need to use a oscilioscope and monitor each wire at the coil/throttle body and then compare the reading on that same wire at the pcm to determine which wire is having the interference then replace or reroute that wire. Check the wire connections to the PCM also. I hope this helps.
crunk it up ,that's good english . Cranked it up How many miles on the vehicle ! The wrench light is a warning light for the transmission or the electronic throttle control .All new vehicle's have electronic throttle control , there are position sensor's in the APP an in the throttle body an they ware out . It's your responsibility to keep it maintained . Not just to jiffy lube !To the Dealer to have diagnostic's run on the electronics.
Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor vs. Throttle Position Sensor
We have been experiencing same faults on a 2005 Expedition, with engine stopping and the message "Check electronic throttle". Ifirst went to AutoZone and they read the codes. They suggested replacing thethrottle sensor, which we did, but car stopped again. We had to replace thebattery in a month and this is the fix. The battery was almost 6 years old andwhen you first start your engine, it sucks too much load and gives these faultsto the computer. It never stopped since then (3 mo already). Sometimes we useto get the message 3 times a day.
Go to Autozone if the vehicle will run. Have them test the computer for codes. If not running, the TPS, Throttle Position Sensor is easy to change.
You would take off all the air filter ductwork up to the metal part on the engine. There is one big butterfly valve on this part. The TPS screws onto the metal airhorn and has 2 screws and 1 electric plug and is on the drivers side of the metal part. It is about the size of a cigarette lighter. The part slips over the slot of the butterfly shaft. Just be sure everything lines up. It is usually correct when installed.
There is some adjustment possible, but write us again for those instructions. You really should be okay the way it is. Let us know how this worked for you.
The ETC is located inline with the air intake hose. Take the air intake hose off, then take the ETC off. Go to advanced auto or autozone and get carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner. Give the ETC a good bath and put it back on that should fix the problem and save you $600 or more in repair. This is a typical problem with the ETC when you start to get high miles. Hope this helps it help me.
We ended up taking the vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop. The codes came up indicating a failed throttle body, most likely in the electronics. After a few more pinpoint tests, the recommendation was to replace the throttle body. The cost for this repair was just under $500. Since there is no aftermarket on this part, Genuine Ford parts were used.
