You can't program a Mercedes CLS 500 Key Fob without special programming equipment. There are some automotive locksmiths that have this equipment, but not many. I would still try to find a locksmith as they are usually more affordable than the dealer.
In some cars, you have to depress the switch a little bit further in to start it. I am not familiar with this Mercedes but it is worth trying. In some cars, the key fob has a disabling mode if the key is not activated, the car will not start.
Remove the Glove key from the FOB. Inside the slot you can see the little plastic slider. Slider it in and the same time detach the top FOB up and pull it out of the FOB body. After that you will see the battery to replace. Have fun.
Sounds like the battery for sure. On German cars, especially high end ones... the battery is not usually replacable. You might try prying the fob open with a small flat screw driver or butter knife to see if the battery is soldiered to the board or if it can be removed. If it's soldiered you'll need a new fob. Contact the Merc dealer... this is the only place that can copy and program Merc keys... unless you can find a Merc specialty shop. Good luck.
