Im in the middle of this job right now..its possible to take the rear speakers out just use a thin flathead. and be gentle. make sure you only unbolt the 3 outer nuts and leave the center one or the strut will collaps and make it a ***** to menouver.

I have not done this model, but the hardest part on these cars is usually getting the trunk lining off the shock towers so you can access the bolts at the tops of the shocks. On a '98 three series, you have to remove the rear speakers to get the trunk lining out intact. To remove the rear speakers, you have to snap up the speaker covers in the rear deck, and snapping up those covers without breaking them when they are 13 years old and brittle is just about impossible.
I don't know if your rear speakers will have to come out to get to the shock towers. For your sake, I hope not. It would be tempting (and much quicker) to cut the trunk lining off the shock towers and glue it back when you are done. If you do it neatly, only another BMW owner would notice what you had done.

If you do remove the speaker covers, the edge that faces the front of the car hooks under the deck. The other three sides snap down. You might have more luck if you slide a clean putty knife beneath the grill to try to gently press the snaps inward while pulling up on the grill.

My son was driving my truck just the other day and told me that he was noticing this clicking noise. I am worried that it is my struts going bad. I'm starting to wonder if it is time to get them out. http://www.genesoktire.com/services.html

I had the same problem on the rear door of my 1998 528i and it was the door actuator that had gone bad. I had to take the rear seat out to get the door panel off. Once I had the door panel off it was not that difficult to replace the door actuator.

You can jump your 98 528i from under your hood. On top of the center of your engine there is a positive (+) sign. You have to pry the cover open and there is also a negative ground spot to the left of that. Bmw is pretty smart!

BMW 528i s reg rear suspension

Check for pressure out of the air pump. If there, then the problem is a blown seal in the shock.
