Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee. It always starts fine from home but sometimes when I am out and have left the car in a parking lot, the steering column is locked, usually upside down or sideways, when I return The first time this happened it took me about 2 hours to loosen it, I tried turning it and twisting it, etc. I am still not sure f it loosened because of what I did or just time passing. Because the second time, I just had it towed home and it started the next day when I went out tried it. It has now happened four times. The car has always started eventually; usually after a few hours and twice without my twisting the wheel; I just waited a few hours and came back and retried it. The really weird thing is that it seems to unlock spontaneously after a few hours.

Make sure you park with the wheels straight. Sometimes the steering lock is real tough to disenguage if the wheel is shut off with it not straight. This vehicle is particularly tough at times. Next time you're in this jam, you should be able to yank on the wheel in one direction or the other and it will free up the ignition to turn on.

This is good answer as far as it goes. I have figured out about the wheel lock function and can disengage that. This is much worse. The steering wheel goes completely upside down even though it was upright when I left the care. I have tried yanking on the wheel but it can take hours to get it to loosen.

turn wheel to right or left while turning the key. and always straighten your wheels to take pressure of the steering column when parking. leaving the wheels turned will cause this problem

Here's something to consider..... Sometimes, when one parks against a curb, there is a tendency for the ignition switch and the gear shift to kind of get in a bind. Sometimes, forcing the steering wheel to turn a bit, one way or the other, will relieve the pressure of things so that the gear shift or the ignition switch will function properly... OR, you might try putting the gear shift in Neutral... and then returning it to Park... Just some thoughts...

this might sound easy but have you turned the wheel enough to take tension off the key mechisium it sometimes puts a lot of preassure on the lock and you cant turn key till you turn steering wheel opposite direction to take preassure off key lock

The front wheels are locked up and the steering wheel is locked up and i cant even start it

keep your foot on the brakes make sure the car is in park, try turning the steering left to right while trying to start.

This bulletin involves the replacement of the power steering pressure
and return hoses and tube.

it might be a jammed ball joint or tie rod you have to disconnect tie rod to see whats jam
