1984 ford f-150 inline 6, 1 barrel carb. will only crank when pouring gas directly into carb and will run until gas burns off. I am getting strong fuel to carb through fuel pump. If my float is sticking how would i know? PLEASE HELP

  • Eric Harrison Jan 24, 2011

thanks for the info! I actually just dropped my tank and changed all rubber fuel lines due to dry rot. The gas i am pouring down my carb is from my tank which is lying on the ground in front of my truck. I hooked a Direct fuel line from my fuel pump to the tank. it is cranking with the gas poured into the carb but will not continue to run with the fuel line attached. this problem all started when fuel began pouring out of a rubber hose in front of the carb. next to the fuel filter. i then took the carb off and somewhat cleaned the inside and made sure the float was not stuck. any info would be great! thanks

I need to ask a few questions and please do not think I am insulting you.
How much gas is in tank?
Is the gas good gas and not with water in it? Can you take any gas from the hose into a clear container and wait a minute and see if separation occurs?
Can you see gas squirt into carburetor when you pull on the accelerator cable or push the lever in on the carb? If you can see it..it is going into the intake and .most likely bad gas.
Lastly and another problem area is the fuel jet inside the carb is stuck or has an obstruction such as goo from bad gas?
This gives you some ideas on what to look for and thanks for using FixYa.

Ok as I said before try to see if gas is squirting into the carb when you hit the gas pedal or push the lever at the end of your accelerator cable attached to your carb. Take the aii breather/filter off again if you haven't and get a flash light and shine down into it while hitting the gas hard and quick . If you do not see any stream of gas then yes the float is stuck closed. You could also have a bad acceleratiion pump(located on the side of the carb and shoots the gas into your carb) but I doubt that cause at least it would idle. So since you are using good gas have replace the pump and filter...and it still will not run unless you feed it yourself then all it can be is the float if you cannot see a small stream of gas shoot into it. Hope this finally gets you going since you have spent a lot of time on it and thanks for using FixYa.

There is a fuel filter in the carburetor where you pull the fuel line off. There is a bigger nut that you will have to take off to get to the filter. If this filter is clean, you should be getting fuel. There is not much to these carbs. It might be safe to pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning. Get some carb cleaner and spray all of the jets out and make sure that there is no debris in the jets. And make sure that the float is operating correctly. If the float is stuck then the carb will not allow any fuel in.

Not getting gas to carb

It could be. Since you have a carburetor, you must have a mechanical fuel pump on the engine? Only some imports with carburetors had an electrical pump.

If your filter is in the line just before the carburetor, take the line off at the filter, then crank the engine over to see if the pump is working. Mechanical fuel pumps will pump gas when the engine is cranking or running. Use a jar or can to catch the gas. If pump is working, fuel will come out in small spurts. It's not under high pressure- carbs don't need high pressure. If no gas comes out of the line, you probably need a new fuel pump. If the pump is working, it could be the filter, but could also be the needle valve and seat at the carb's fuel inlet. Sometimes they get stuck closed and won't let gas into the carburetor.

I have a 1963 chevy nova II straight-6. I am having trouble getting it to run without pouring gasoline into the carb. I have replaced the filters and fuel pump. What else could be the problem?

the needle and seat in the carburetor might be stuck shut. Pull the fuel supply line off of the carburetor and unhook the coil wire, so the engine will not fire, crank the engine and make sure the fuel pump is pumping fuel to the carb. If there isn't fuel getting to the carb then you will need to look elsewhere, like maybe the sending unit in the tank. But if you do have good fuel getting to the carb then it is probably the needle and seat in the carb.

How to prime carburetor on 1988 Toyota tercel 1bbl

Normally, you wouldn't need to do this to get the engine started. If you have a mechanical fuel pump ion the engine, just cranking the engine over should cause the pump to push gas into the carburetor. And if an electric pump, it should come on with the key in on.

But to prime, pour a small amount of gas down the throat of the carb, and crank. As the engine fires and runs, the pump should begin working and pushing fuel into the carb.

Why does my carburetor only run when I prime it?

you will have to remove the mechanical pump and prime it before it will pump fuel. Quickest way if you can put your hands in fuel is to put the pump in a bucket of fuel and work the lever. It will only take a few pumps of the lever to get fuel into the pump. If fuel affects your skin then attach a hose to the inlet side and work the lever. Then when you refit the pump ,make sure that the lever is on the correct side of the cam. After that you will have fuel in the carby fairly quickly (30 secs of cranking or less)

1994 Isuzu Pickup 2.3L carbureted motor with mechanical fuel pump lost prime

If it were just that you would be ok once the engine started.
You might have a float problem with the carb. or something in the tank.
Are you sure the pump is not pumping ?

My 1987 Dodge Raider has been in storage for 4 years. My problem is it will turn over but will not start. However if I pour a little gas down the carburator it cranks right up.Were do I start trouble...

If you know where the fuel line comes into the carburator, disconnect it and try to crank to see if there is fuel coming out, could be the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator or even the fuel pump itself, check the filter first. Good Luck.
