Theres an oring on that housing and is a common leak, remove the filter and then the stud that the filter screws on is removed to remove the housing and then you will see the oring. good luck.

SOURCE: 1994 Jetta oil leak by

If the housing was cracked you would very likely have many more problems than a leak.

It's very likely your oil filter just needs to be tightened.

About 1 in 5 oil leaks that I see in that location are resolved by getting an extra 1/2 to 3/4 turn,
clockwise, on the oil filter.

Many of the new oil filters have a rubber seal on the filter that meets the surface of the engine.
The design allows filters to be installed by hand tightening only, without the need of an oil filter
wrench, however, often people have oil or grime on their hands and are not able to get a good enough grip to tighten it as well as it needs to be.

I have a 1994 Lincoln Town Car that has problems more than once with having oil leaks from the oil filter housing seal.

Question edited for typo.
Question moved to sub category.

My first thought was "are you oiling the gasket on the oil filter when you install it"? The rubber gasket needs to turn and seat.

However, it is a documented issue.

1994 Silverrodo 350 4X4. The oil filter housing started to leak took it off, siliconed the new o-ring in place there was 4 hair line crack that went under the o-ring but didn't look like they went to the...

Never use silicone on a lubrication oil circuit. It will only stop something up somewhere and not help the oring seal.Clean the surfaces with scotchbrite and install dry.If the adapter housing is cracked then replace it.

1994 Jetta oil leak by filter, can the housing where the oill filter screws in get a crack or it just a seal that needs to be replace Thanks Jerry

I suspect that some how the spin on filter has been knocked loose and disturbed the integrity of the "O" Ring seal, or the spin on filter was put on wrong and pinched the "O" Ring seal. You will have to try a new filter and "O" Ring, which means draining the oil and replacing. When fitting a new "O" Ring to a new filter, be sure that the ring fits perfectly in the slot. Coat the "O" Ring with some vasoline to hold it n place. If the "O" Ring will not fit flat in the grove heat the "O" Ring in a pan of hot water for about two minutes. This will relax the ring and take out any folds.

How do i repair oil filter housing leak?

The oil is most likely leaking from the oil cooler seal. The oil cooler is the square aluminum piece that the oil filter screws onto. To replace the seal, remove the filter, remove both coolant hoses that attach to the cooler, remove the nut that secures the cooler to the block and slide the cooler off the tube. Replace the rubber o-ring seal which is available at the VW dealer. It's inexpensive. Replace everything in reverse order. Good luck!

Looks like the oil is leaking out right above the

oil filter screws onto an adapter housing which also has the pressure sending unit on it (above oil filter). This adapter housing bolts to the block with 3 bolts. if oil appears to be leaking from where the adapter housing meets the block (especially at the rear side of engine near bottom), then you need to replace the siamese o-rings between the adapter housing and the block ($12 part at dealer). remove lowest 12mm bolt and loosen top 2 12 mm bolts(top 2 bolts won't come out unless you drop the engine down, but loosening 1 inch is all you need), replace o-rings and retighten bolts. be careful not to get dirt/grit between block and adapter. just finished doing this to son's 95 2.7 v6 which was leaving an 8" puddle of oil after idling for only 1 minute-worked perfect

Oil leak

There is a gasket (oring) you need to get from the dealer. Have them print out a diagram of the oil cooler so you can see how it comes apart. Buy the gasket, remove the oil filter, remove the nut that holds the housing together(it will be at the base of the stud that oil filter screws onto, 27mm deep well), clean out the old brittle cracked o-ring and replace it, reverse disassembly, and smile because you were done in less than an hour.

97 jetta with oil pouring out just above where the filter ataches

I have a 1997 jetta and have been through this. Go to the volkswagen dealer and have them pull up the oil cooler housing. You will see a gasket (o-ring) that seals the two pieces of this housing together. Buy that. Your old one has gotten brittle from years of extreme temperature swings and cracked ( it will be like hard plastic when you remove it.) Unscrew your filter, take a 27mm socket (prob need deep well) and unscrew the nut at the top of stud where the filter screws to. Take it all the way off and remove the old o-ring. Clean the area well and put your new oil swabbed o-ring in and reverse the above steps. 30 min 8 dollar fix. Good luck!
