I have an 02 Passat 2.8 4 Motion. I just had mine done at 95k and my mechanic said the belt was in surprisingly good condition. Although, its better safe than sorry. VW/Audi has had a history of premature belt breaks. If it does break say good bye to your engine. Both the 1.8T & 2.8 are interference engines. The cylinder will crush the valves.
Use a private shop...I paid $560 for both timing belt and water pump. Dealer quoted me $1300!

How to change the cam chain pads on the driver side of a vw 2001 passat V6 2.8l

You surely do. You should invest in a manual. Timing is a critical part of any engine. The manual tells you to move every thing from the front of the vehicle. I just remove enough to let the radiator and bumper hang off the lower hoses. This is enough room to accomplish what you need to do. I suggest strongly that you replace all the parts of the timing. You only want to do this once.

2002 Turbo, V6. Does it have timing belt or timing chain?

autodata book describes volkswagen passat 2.8 l v6 30 valve --1998-06 as having a belt
it is identified as an intereference engine which means that valve damage will occur if the cam shafts and piston are not set right and are moved with out care being taken

How long will a timing chain last on a passat with a v6 engine

Hi,
Actually the timing chain is for a lifetime, the only thing you replace is the chain guide and the tensioner.

Hope that helps you out!

Is the front engine seal related to the time chain tensioner seal got a link behide the timeing belt

Don't quiet understand your question...but here's some insight.

The chain is under the valve cover/s ( 1.8t and some 2.8 V6.) and drives 2 or 4 cam shafts.

If it is the VR6 engine then the chain is in the front of the engine.

1.8t has seals on at cam sensor at rear of head and seals at front for crank and cam. To install it needs belt removed for front seals. 2.0 gas engine same except no rear cam seals.

All oil seals are now Teflon and a new instal procedure must be followed. Briefly : Installed dry...allowed to sit 4 hours before engine started.

Post again if this does not answer your question. We need year and model to give you a definitive answer.

Check engine light flashing and car idling low. 2003 Passat V6 4Motion. Recently replaced the timing belt. Was told this is unrelated. Need to replace Cam Belt for cylinders 4,5, and 6

First things first. The check engine light is blinking because the engine is misfiring to a point that could damage the catalytic converter. If cylinder 4 5 & 6 are all misfiring i would check the engine timing belt for proper installation. These are the cylinders for the left bank of the engine. If the belt has jumped or was installed wrong this would explain the misfires. Unfortunately this is an interference motor which means there is a high probability if the belt is on wrong, the engine valves mat be damaged. I would perform a compression test on those cylinders to verify the belt condition. Hope this helps.

Show me how to replace a water on a 1999 VW Passat e a water pump on a 1999 VW Passat

It depends on what engine you have, but all 3 are similar. They are all in the front of the engine, so the water pump can be run by a belt. With the 1.8 turbo, it is run by the serpentine belt, but you still have to take the timing belt off because it is behind the timing belt slightly. The Vr6 is run by the timing belt, so also needs the belt removed. The V6 was less common, but also difficult. You do not have to take the timing belt off I think, but you have to remove the whole chassis at the front, because there is so little room otherwise. There really are only 4 main bolts holding the whole chassis front on. It is recommended that the thermostat and timing belt be done at the same time, to save labor, since it is intensive on any engine.

Hi Looking to get the timing belt changed on my 2002 Passat GLX 4Motion. I have 145000 miles on the car. But after speaking with the mechanic its going to cost me over $1200. Not somthing I have available...

Jen... I have a 2002 Passat 2.8 V6 4Motion with 125,000 I just changed the Timming Belt, Water Pump, tensioners and thermostat. One dealer was charging me 1500 dollars and the other just 1000... I bought the parts myself thru www.germanautoparts.com and found a mechanic with experience, and he charged me 420 dolares. In total I paid something around 650 for the repair. In the end, my timming belt could last me more than 20 thousand miles more... but either way is a risk. If the belt brakes the repair will go for 4000 dollars to fix the engine. I'm in NE.

Timing Belt Broke. 2002 Volkswagen Passat . Time for a new car?

i would go with the mechanics advice and allow them to fix it. 1200 to 1500 beats spending 4000 on another motor if that one can be saved
