I have a 2000 Kia Sportage, and on the driver side the wiper either goes to far or ends up getting stuck in the other wiper. I removed arm and under the arm the splines for mounting the arm are stripped. How do I fix or replace this?

SOURCE: I have a 2000 Kia Sportage, and on the driver side

Simple fix:

Use epoxy glue to stick the splines back together. I like to use 'gel epoxy' which is a two step resin/hardener that is mixed together with a stick, and can withstand upwards of 2,000 lbs. of shear force, when applied to a clean and dry surface such as the metal found on windshield wiper blades.

Gel Epoxy will not run like regular 5 minute epoxy, and sets in about 6 minutes. Available at your local Ace Hardware store, or auto parts store, in many cases.

Good luck on this repair.

My driver side windshield wiper gear is stripped out allowing the wiper to go were it wishes. It either travels to far and ends up getting stuck on the driver door or it goes to far down and ends up...

Knowing the make and model of your vehicle would help immensely. From your description and my experience, I would say it's not a gear, but the wiper arm itself. Where the arm mounts to the wiper transmission (aka motor), there will be a plastic or sometimes metal cover, gently pull or pry upward on the edge of it to expose the nut that keeps it in place. Remove this nut and then the arm, and inspect the 'teeth' or splines inside the hole on the arm, and on the wiper transmission, where the arm mounts. Most often the arms are made of aluminum, and the transmission is of steel, so the arm will strip first. Usually the arm can be replaced (try a junkyard for a low cost replacement) without much effort, and a few basic hand tools. Also be sure to clean any residual material from the wiper transmission where the arm mounts prior to installation, a piece of steel wool or brillo pad usually works best. I hope this helps, and good luck.

Wiper Motor

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the four mounting bolts securing the motor to the firewall.
  4. Using a suitable prybar, carefully separate the wiper motor from the wiper linkage and remove the motor.

To install:
  1. Attach the wiper motor ball joint to the wiper linkage.
  2. Position the motor on the firewall and secure the motor with the four mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.play0027_0.gif

On my Kia Sportage 'V' reg my windshield wipers stopped working. it isn't the fuse and you can hear the motor trying to work. How do I remove the wipers so that I can lift the plastic cowling between...

Some wiper arms are simply a push fit onto the drive shafts and some have a nut securing them on under a cover which has to be lifted up first. Try lifting up any plastic covers on the base of the arm at the windshield. If it looks like there is no cover then the arms are held on by the force of the springs and by a taper on the drive shafts and if you lift the arms off the windshield and gently rock them as you pull them away from the vehicle they will release..Just make sure that before you refit the arms that you run the wiper motor and allow it to self park as I have seen wiper arms remove paint when they have been dragged off the windscreen and over the paintwork and the wiper motor is easily powerful enough to cause real damage..
