    Is it possible that my problem is a cloged fuel filter and not a bad fuel pump? I am going to do the job sunday.

  2. You got lucky as you do not have to drop the fuel tank to perform this job.
  3. There is an access panel right rear of the back seat...
  4. Release fuel pressure from fuel line.
  5. Remove inspection hole cover located behind the rear seat.
  6. Disconnect harness connectors and fuel tubes from upper plate of fuel gauge.
  7. Put mating marks on tubes for correct installation.
  8. Remove fuel gauge retainer and fuel gauge.
  9. Remove fuel pump with bracket while lifting the paw of the fuel pump bracket upward.
  10. Installation procedure is the reverse order of removal.

Fuel Pump & Fuel Level Sensor Unit Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove the fuel filler cap to release pressure in the tank.
  3. Remove the service hole cover located under the rear seat.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors and fuel lines from the fuel level sensor unit. Mark the tubes so they will be installed in their original locations.
  5. Remove the screws and retainer.
  6. Carefully lift the fuel level sensor unit from the tank. CAUTION
    Do not bend the float arm during removal.
  7. Disconnect the fuel lines from the bottom of the fuel level sensor unit.
  8. Reach inside the tank, lift the pawl and remove the fuel pump from the tank.

Fuel pump removal

To Install:
  1. Install the fuel pump in the tank.
  2. Place a new o-ring on the fuel tank.
  3. Connect the fuel lines to the bottom of the fuel level sensor unit.
  4. Install the retainer and screws to secure the fuel level sensor unit.
  5. Connect the fuel lines and the electrical connectors to the fuel level sensor unit.
  6. Turn the ignition to ON and check for leaks.
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8. Install the service hole cover and rear seat.

    If the filter is stopped up enough to restrict fuel flow the pump is usually damaged and wont pump enough even with a new filter. When you change the filter, blow through it and compare it to the new one and of course do the filter and then see if the engine will start before replacing the pump.

    Do you think the gasket or seal is sticking and not letting it come out. If it's coming up some but something is catching it try turning and tilting it. But be gentle so you don't brake anything.

It looks like your water pump on a 3.5L is run off the timing chain. I got some info which may help see it but may not be the exact as your car. If you are having some problems with overheating from what I saw looks like you have 2 thermostats and after changing thermostats, you can have air trapped in your engine, which will still allow engine to overheat.

Fuel shut off switch location
The fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) is in the drivers footwell behind the kick panel. The panel is probably held on with clips and will pop off with a light tug.

Fuel system on infiniti 1999
Turn key forward and listen for the fuel pump to kick on. It will make a high pitched sound then shut off. If no sound the more than likely you need a fuel pump. You can check at the fuel rail with a guage pressure should be 30psi.
