In case it is a power supply problem, I would tap hard on the area just below the clock casing. This usually leads to the illumination coming on and the clock starting. Make sure the ignition switch is on.

Change the thermostat and the fluid, that is more than enough.
The hoses should be replaced if they are soft or leaking. I'm presuming your car has 100k+ miles. so also change the belts.
