Have one myself w/over 400.000 miles suggest you change transmission fluid and filter, just add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change. never had problems w.mine. but firm beleiver in lucas oil and transmission and fuel treatments. just trying to see how far i can go w/mine. the lucas treatment added to your fluid and transmission fluid and filter change frees up stuck valves in the transmission. sounds alot like you may have a stuck valve body in the transmission to me.pull your transmission fluid dip stick, this is going to sound strange but go with me for a second please, does the fluid smell burnt? do'nt be scared to put it on your finger and sniff it. if it smells like burnt expletitive, then it needs replaced and filter too. just please add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change, you will not regret it. the treatment [lucas] will cost an extra $11.00 onto the fluid change, trust me, you will not regret it!fluid changes are a must for ford explorers 4x4 don't know why,but they demand baby formula. lucas,i've found is that formula. thank you for choosing fixya.com we are here 24/7 for you 7days

SOURCE: The transmission seems to slip

How many miles and is it the original transmission? The AOD transmissions are known for 3-4 and reverse to go out first. The transmission is probably heading towards an inevitable rebuild or replacement. The reverse clutch pack is probably getting to old to hold correctly.

1994 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4 wont go into Drive???

Question edited for clarity, full year make model
Question moved to sub category.

It appears to have history. A bit worrying you say 'kinda changed the filter and fluid'. Most are sealed for life, and the amount of fluid is critical. If you drain, you measure what comes out and replace with the same amount of the right type of ATF.

You are not alone with issues

2002 ford explorer will drive forward but wont move in reverse...what could be the cause?

bad transmission. if it shifts through gears going forward but will not do anything in reverse it is most likely a bad transmission. reverse is usually the first gear that goes out .

What causes Jimmy transmission to slip in forward gears, but OK in reverse

If your fluid level is right you may have a bad transmission. you need to talk to a mechanic.

V70 poured new Dex3 auto trans in. Reverse gear stops working after a few days equal 500km, but all forward are still ok.

Sounds like your transmission is going bad. If your transmission is slipping only in drive or forward gears, then it could be just that it is low on fluid, but when reverse starts to slip it usually means rebuild/replace transmission.

Good luck

Replaced 2 3 sol in trans goes forward in all gears

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.

Automatic trans slips 92 ford explorer

I would have the transmission check if you plan on keeping the car a long time. The lucas oil is an additive for the oil. The additive is making the fluid a little heavier and tricking the soleniods or clutch and bands with a different pressures.

This is a temporary fix. The transmission over time is going to start to slip more and more.

1994 ford explorer eddie

the transmission is loseing internal fluid pressure, its time for a rebuilt transmission. The A4ld that your explorer has is prone to trouble in this area. A good rebuilt transmission may cost at least $1700 dollars.
